Early Viewer Review of Tomorrow Night's "Author, Author"

TrekWeb visitor 'DarExc' had the opportunity to view tomorrow night's "Author, Author" last night and sent in this brief summary and review:

"I just watched the new episode (It played at 9pm EST and the next here in Ottawa). It was another generally stupid episode but it did bring up some interesting things about holo rights. The Doctor had a holo novel released even after he asked the publisher to wait for revisions but the publisher went ahead with it anyway because Federation laws state nothing about holograms. The Doctor is given a court sesion with a Federation arbitrator to convince him to give holograms the same rights as humans. The crew all give their stories on how the doctor has improved on his own and disobeyed orders even though he was programed to follow them and has developed relationships with the crew, over a course of 3 days. The arbitrator judges that he is not prepared to give rights to holograms and that this issue will not go away and has only started but does give him the rights over the art that he creates, thus allowing him to recall his novel. The interesting part was at the end though when we see a dilithium moon 2 months later with about 20 EMH Mark Ones and they are talking about the Doctor's holo-novel, Photons be Free."

Episode Similarities

I don't usually post very many negative comments here, and I haven't seen this episode yet so I can't fully judge it. But I must admit that one of my first reactions to this synopsis was that this episode reminds me alot of the TNG episode "Measure of a Man." I hope this is not simply a copy of that episode, with The Doctor substituted for Data.

Take care!

My first reaction is "not another holo-rights episode", we've had a few of those already. But this could be a little but of a fresh idea because it involves the Alpha quadrant. You would have though that the Federation was already somewhat aware of the Doctor's standing on Voyager, scince they have been in communication for awhile now and the Doctor has even been back to the Alpha Quadrant.

But it's a Doctor show so that means it should be fun, even the weaker Doctor shows are always good, if not do to Robert Picardo's acting alone.
