Vulcan Character 'T'Pau' Gets Name Change |
|

Dept: Enterprise
Ever since the casting sheet was released on the Internet two months ago, the character of 'T'Pau' has been of particular interest to fans, not only because this new science officer seems to be shaping up as much to be like 'Spock' as 'Captain Archer' is to be 'Kirk', but because her name is shared by another Vulcan character in Trek's history.
This conflict can be put to rest now, however, because just as 'Jackson Archer' became 'Jonathan Archer' since the original casting sheet, TrekWeb sources suggest that that indeed T'Pau is now T'Pal -- and try saying that five times fast! Although not officially announced yet, it is believed that actress Jolene Blalock (pictured above) will be portraying the character. |

Are they kidding? If they need a new name, they should pick something that does not have a meaning in english at least. I mean, what will fans think when a 7 of 9 clone is called a friend, a comrade?! LOL

It could also just be that they couldn't find an actress that they felt would be consistant with Cecila Lovsky from Amok Time. The rumors were that they were having trouble casting that character.
I would have liked to have seen the T'Pau character as well. However, if the actress didn't fit that role, then it's better to change it.

T'Pal

Greetings,
we can debate this until we're green in the face, but as I see it, only two reasons, seperately or jointly, stand for this name change:
1. CONTINUITY - perhaps B & B wanted to avoid at least one continuity problem by ensuring that T'Pal would be able to develop freely as a character, growing closer to ze outvorlders than T'Pau could ever be. Remember: T'Pau is to turn down a seat pon the Federation Council and is seen in Trek literature as a Vulcan for Vulcan, more than a Vulcan for space (see, eg. "Spock's World", Diane Carey).
2. MONEY - T'Pau is, by intellectual property law, property of the writer of "Amok Time". A sizeable sum would have to be paid to his estate for every mention of the name. The costs of this could outweigh the potentially nice twist of having T'Pau on this Enterprise.
A sidenote: has it ever occurred to anyone that, just like several people may have the same name here and today (eg. John Smith, Peter Johnson, etc.), the same may happen in the future ? An identical name does not necessarily mean we're talking about the same person in the first place.

Hey Rick?
Yes Brannon?
By a weird coincidence, one of my favorite groups from the '80's was called T'Pau and I thought it would make a cool name for our new Vulcan on Enterprise. What do you think?
Sounds good! No one's ever been called that on a Star Trek show before, right?
Nooo, I'm almost positive no one has.
Go for it then.

Umm, hey Rick, guess what?

T'Pal Redux?

I think we've heard the name "T'Pal" used before, also. In TNG's "Gambit" two-parter, didn't Tallera (Robin Curtis) give the name "T'Pal" as her alias?
This isn't the first time this double-naming has happened, BTW. Tuvok's wife "T'Pel" had her name taken from the treacherous Romulan, Subcommander Selok, who impersonated a Vulcan ambassador named "T'Pel" in TNG's "Data's Day."

That they never intended for the name to be T'Pau and always planned to change it? Since the TPTB know that the casting sheet is usally the first "official" thing to get around on the net, perhaps they just changed the names abit to leave us wondering. I for one am glad that it is not a young T'Pau.

BRILLIANT!

I must say, I take back everything bad I ever said about Rick Berman and Brannon Braga. Just the sheer brilliance of taking an Original Series character, changing one letter in her name, and putting her on a ship called Enterprise is the most daring move those two have made yet! Maybe they'll change the engineer's name to Schott, the navigator's name to Slulu, the captain's name to Kirkland, and make the weapon's officer's name some variation of Chekov, like...........Chakotay? Wait a second......

i agree with the poster who said he hoped it was the same t'pau. i was hoping we would get to see the reason for kirk's comment that she was the only person to turn down a seat on the federation council. also kirk and co. seemed to be awed by her prescence, perhaps because of her early voyages with archer? it also seemed that b&b were interested in trek's history and furthering the backstory. it was just a nice touch i thought. but alas, with the name change, all this has come to pass.

T'Pau Name Change: Reckless
By deepthroat9

I think this demonstrates the possible reckless nature used to develop this series. It is possible that B&B came up with this name coinicidently and didn't realize there was a Trek figure with this name. Or they initialy planned on making this character a younger version of the legendary T'Pau, and now have changed their minds knowing that it wont work out. Either way, it's a bit reckless and carefree with TREK lore - which I'm sure we'll see alot of with ENTERPRISE.
Plus, I like the idea of it being T'Pau and have been keen on the connection with TREK history to this character. Now, it seems a bit dumb, and so does the name change. T'Pal? Sounds like some rappers little side kick.

3 reasons

for this change.
1: B&B are attempting to keep Trek history in tact and thereby changing ONE LETTER to bring about a significant difference in the casting for this prequel thing.
2: It's NOT going to be a prequel series and they didn't want two characters in star trek to have the same name to conflict with the T'Pau from "Ammok Time"
3: B&B Are totally changing Star Trek around and making it their own - maybe T'Pal IS T'Pau, but with a different name and with a totally different background - but will still set an example for Vulcan relations with the Federation in B&B's new SciFi series.
I could be totally wrong but that's just my opinion.
