John Eaves Talks About S.S Enterprise's Design

Posted: 16:17:49 on June 04
By: GustavoLeao
Dept: Enterprise

The Lcars Computer Network website just posted an exclusive interview with John Eaves, the ENTERPRISE senior illustrator responsible for the design of the 22nd Century ship (which, according to him is still being worked on). Eaves also discussed the first episode and the overall look of the new series and he thoughts on star Scott Bakula as Captain Archer.

Eaves revealed that the S.S Enteprise will be smaller than Kirk's Constitution Class U.S.S Enteprise, and that the design will please fans of the Akira Class starship design, seen in Star Trek First Contact and several DS9 and Voyager episodes. More info and images on the Akira Class design can be found here.

He said that he did pitch the idea of using the Matt Jefferies's 'spaceship Enterprise' design as seen in the rec deck display of the refitted Enteprise in 'Star Trek The Motion Picture', but it was turned down. More info and images on this original 70's design can be found here

If berman were to work with Robert Wise, maybe he could get the new SS Enterprise design placed in the rec-deck of the Enterprise in ST-TMP-TDE.

i hope that eaves' comments helps to alieviate fears that some treksters hold for the new show. sounds to me like they are making an effort to preserve continuity. i for one am glad they didn't use the ship on the rec deck of the enterprise. its just too ugly. i look forward to this show.

No transporters and Klingon ridges
By Shanok of Vulcan () at 02:37:24 on June 05

Greetings,

I was pleased to read in the John Eaves Interview that the retro style will be respected throughout the ship, firmly in line with continuity. Also the general absence of easy-to-use transporters is a clever move: like this, this very original element of TOS remains original to that series. No "beam me up, Spike". Also, the gradual testing and introduction of the first transporters could be a nice bridge of continuity with TOS and could make for some nice plot devices.

John Eaves says we'll see klingons with ridges. I have absolutely no continuity problem with this, as it's canon knowledge that Gene intended the ridges as of day ne on TOS. And look at it this ay: if there WEREN'T any ridges, it would take little time before the cyics would start complaining that the Klingons look "bland". We're used to klingons with ridges since 1977, so hurrah for continuity in that respect as well.

Most important good news of the day seems to be that someone else than B & B and an outsider to the writing and episode production confirms that we will get a lot of the TOS and TNG feel back into Trek. As a lot of us have stated earlier, Trek's very future may hinge on this.

First peice of good news

All of my hope for a kickass star-ship lay in John Eaves designing the ship. Enterprise E was the epitome of a sleek, sharp and kickass ship, though in first contact the only the other ship i was really impressed with was infact the Akira class. It was also sleek and a compact kick-ass ship. With John eaves stating that Enterprise is based on a near retro version of Akira class, I am now very hopeful that we still may have a asthetically pleasing star-ship even in 22nd century. Things are begining to look better for Enterprise now.

I get it. The STE ship is a saucer with nacelles.

I even know how it will look now. It will be a sphere, most likely a somewhat squashed sphere, less likely the more common flat ST saucer, with two nacelles attached.
Interestingly, the spherical shape would allow at least a part of it to be a rotating ring providing pseudo-gravity.

Trek X Start date...

Interesting little aside in that interview about how production for Trek X will start next month. I don't know how this could happen since there's been nothing said about it so far ala actors and director. Unless he meant pre-production because I hope there are several elaborate sets involved. That and has this whole actor's strike been worked out yet?

If what John said in the interview is true, then there will be NO transporters and the timeframe of the show will be in the MID 22nd century near the Romulan Wars and the birth of the Federation! Woo hoo!

"He said that he did pitch the idea of using the Matt Jeffries design as seen in the rec room deck in 'Star Trek The Motion Picture', but it was turned down."

Glad he said he did "pitch" the TMP SS but no way could berm and brag use _that_ design... That would be - like - continuity or something. God forbid.

Actually, Akira class is a kindof cool look.

OPINION POLLS
ENTERPRISE has been revealed this week and we'd like to know how you would rate the show so far based on the new Enterprise NX-01, the interior set design, the new costumes, and any other info that you may already possess!
(A) Spectacular! The first looks offered this week reveal a series with immense potential and more excitement for Star Trek than I've felt since the days of TNG!
(B) Impressive, but cautiously so! What I've seen so far has promise and most of it is in the right direction, but I will restrain my jubilation for after the premiere!
(C) Uninteresting! The photos I've seen so far reveal a series that lacks serious originality in artistic design and I am open-minded yet skeptical of its potential!
(D) Horrifying! What we've been shown so far is unoriginal and unexciting, revealing a series unexcuseably violative of continuity and poorly developed; Paramount will be lucky if I tune in!
