Scott Bakula Confirms New Series Set In Mid-22nd Century

Posted: 17:30:29 on June 27 2001

Dept: Enterprise | www.stenterprise.com

In a telephone interview as part of last weekend's Orlando Leap convention, actor Scott Bakula confirmed that ENTERPRISE will take place ten years before the usually-cited founding date of the Federation, 2161:

It's only a hundred and fifty years from now in 2151 - that's just around the corner," he said in a telephone interview with actress Natasha Pavlovich.

"Its a really great part. I was really excited when I got the script because its the first Starship and I'm the first Captain and its right from the beginning. Even if you don't know Star Trek and you haven't followed the other series this is basically the first one, so you don't need to come to it with lots of lore in terms of what Star Trek is or was."

"[The show] is basically [about] these people are getting on a ship and going out to explore for the first time. It's very much like 'The Right Stuff' or any of those kind of movies, where it's much more humanly based in terms of emotion and seeing this Universe for this first time. Which I think is really exciting."

continuity problems

With all the Time Lines, Parallel Universes, & Alternate Dimensions that we have seen in the Star Trek Series; is anyone really worried about continuity problems & seeming inconsistencies in the Star Trek Chronology, I'm sure they will be easy enough to explain by the writers. I'm kind of glad they decided to do a Series a little closer to our current time. Personally, I just like to see a show with a lot of action, special effects, cool ideals about what the future might hold, good story lines, and
with a little Star Trek woven into the Series for good measure. Which I'm sure it will!

A Possibility
By Sankoni () at 14:59:22 on June 28

Has anyone considered the possibility that perhaps only the first episode is set in the year 2151. It's possible that by the second episode it will alredy be 2153 or 2154. The first episode from TOS (not counting the pilot), for example, took place 6 months to a year before the second episode (at least according to the Chronology). Also the very first episode of Deep Space 9 begins with the battle of Wolf 359, which is also a considerable time before the actual series.

Therefore it is quite possible that only the first episode, or part of the first episode will be set in 2151.

Enterprise:The motion picture

I am willing to bet money that if the ratings are solid they will end enterprise in usual 7 year format with a series-finale which would give us concrete hints that Enterprise has set events in motions that would eventaully lead to the foundation of the federation. And than move on to show-case the actual creation of the Federation in a movie cause Voyager movie is not pratical due to the show low ratings. If rating sink, expect B&B to jump a year or two during the 7 years season and we will get BOTF within the series. Anyway, Enterprise sounds a promising series

i'm so glad the series is set around the time of the founding of the federation. this is something i want to see, along with andorians and daedalus class starships! so, with the timeframe of ENT, i bet we'll see those things.

A whole new tone

Greetings,

human nature continues to intrigue me: when I would log on this forum only a few weeks ago, I would find the most unique collection of scepticism and cynicism by over-spoiled Trek fans ever seen assembled. However, I see that dialogue and constructive criticism are steadily winning out on B&B bashing and plainly insulting one another.

The most intrigiung part of this is that the Change occurred when a detailed review of the Broken Bow plot came from Dark Horizons.

Coulmd it be that what some had said for long is true ? Could it be that some of us jumped to the wrong conclusions on the basis of pure conjecture and lack of data ?

Every piece of new information, right down to the butterfly-snapping Orion Slave Girls, bodes well for the new series.

No apparent continuity errors appears as of yet, or are even hinted at, at a time when the pilot is already wrapped up.

Let me just say that I have high hopes, as I have always have.

Live Long And Prosper,

Shanok of Vulcan

There are no real continuity problems
By Sankoni () at 02:19:58 on June 28

As far as I can tell there are no actual continuity problems with what we know about the show.

The only concrete and undisputable date is that of the Founding of the Federation which takes place in 2161. All other dates are conjectures. Michael Okuda, the author and "guardian" of the Star Trek timeline admits that most of the dates given in the Chronology are simply conjectures. And since Okuda is working on the new show I believe that we can rest assured that any seeming inconsistencies can easily be explained.

We must also remember that Starfleet and the Federation are not one in the same. Starfleet has been described as being an "extension" of the Federation, but that does not necessarily mean that the Federation came first. Perhaps Starfleet was originally an Earth/Vulcan thing, and upon the Birth of the Federation it became incorporated by it.

Same with the Klingons, we know that "hostilities" have existed between Humans and Klingons since c.2218. That date however is based on one of those ambiguous "half a century ago" comments.

Any thoughts?

Scott Bakula Confirms...

Is it my imagination or has the rumored 'pilot episode' based on the book: 'Enterprise: The First Adventure' by Vonda N. McIntyre? Wasn't 'ST: First Contact' based on 'Strangers From the Sky' by Margaret Wander Bonanno? If true, a totally original idea.

If there's going to be first contact with the Klingons and transporter technology, I feel better about it being set mid-century, but I still think it's too early for transporters. Time will tell.

I like that date better than the earlier possibility. Of course, I would RATHER the series ended with the founding of the Federation.

OPINION POLLS
ENTERPRISE has been revealed this week and we'd like to know how you would rate the show so far based on the new Enterprise NX-01, the interior set design, the new costumes, and any other info that you may already possess!
(A) Spectacular! The first looks offered this week reveal a series with immense potential and more excitement for Star Trek than I've felt since the days of TNG!
(B) Impressive, but cautiously so! What I've seen so far has promise and most of it is in the right direction, but I will restrain my jubilation for after the premiere!
(C) Uninteresting! The photos I've seen so far reveal a series that lacks serious originality in artistic design and I am open-minded yet skeptical of its potential!
(D) Horrifying! What we've been shown so far is unoriginal and unexciting, revealing a series unexcuseably violative of continuity and poorly developed; Paramount will be lucky if I tune in!
