'Eden FX' Owner Talks About ENTERPRISE Special Effects

The LCARS Computer Network website just posted an exclusive interview with Eden FX owner John Gross. Eden FX, along with Foundation Imaging, is one of the CGI teams working on the upcoming Trek series ENTERPRISE. They have worked on both Voyager and DS9. According to Gross, the intro for the series is going to be a little different from the previous series and it's not being done by them or Foundation.

"Foundation is actually building the [CGI model of] ship" Gross told LCARS, "but what they'll receive is drawing from all different angles in order to create in the computer what John [Eaves] has created on paper. [...] I think we'll find that most, if not all, of the ships seen in Enterprise will be CG."

Gross also revealed that the characters for ENTERPRISE are all being modeled in CGI to allow for interesting effects with the new heroes throughout the series:

"The entire main cast has been scanned so we can create 3D models of them. This will give us the ability to do all sorts of fun things with them and create really great shots. I can't say what you'll be seeing, but expect some great shots over the run of Enterprise!"

You can read the full interview here.

Bad CGI

I hope we're not going to get any fakey shots of the characters outside the ship doing repairs or "spacewalking" a la Babylon 5. Don't get me wrong, I love B5, but people do not CG very well, and those made up some of B5's worst FX. Sheridan in a space suit flying through a battle in "Thirdspace" comes to mind.

I just thought of something. Could it be that ILM would be doing the intro? Since it's a one shot deal it could be worth the expense for Paramount to have a bit "higher caliber" FX shots in the opening. Kinda like what they did when they got Goldsmith to do the mian title for VOY but he didn't compose anything for the actual show.

the intro

I bet it will be like the QL intro if Bakula had anything to do with it. They would have a monologue voiceover but would show actual scenes from the show like they used to do in the old days (Quantum Leap, Knight Rider, A-team).

that the opening sequence of Enterprise will probably feature the S.S. Enterprise launching from Cape Canaveral or some other launching pad, kind of like the American space shuttles of today. Probably with a voice over from Scott Bakula. Then, as the shuttle is lifting off, the cast will be listed, and then, in Earth orbit, the Enterprise will go to warp. Just my thoughts.

Rick Berman, you ARE the weakest link. Goodbye.

ENT is going to have the best FX of any of the series. This interview only furthered my excitment for ENT and I didn't think that was possible! can't wait to see the new intro, just wonder who is doing it...

You will be watching ENTERPRISE because...
It's a 'Star Trek' series after all, I don't care about the producers, actors, or writers!
Scott Bakula. He is a fan-favorite because of his work on 'Quantum Leap'.
Jolene Blalock . Sexploitation be damned, she is hotter than Jeri Ryan!
It's not set in the over-used 24th Century, full of tecnobabble, quantum anomalies or Borg [yet]!
If nothing else, the UPN promos have done it for me!
Who said I will be watching? Berman and Braga will destroy 'Star Trek' with this prequel concept!
