After Two Gushing Script Reviews, "Broken Bow" Brought Down To Earth |

After two gushing reviews in the past weeks, one from Dark Horizons and another from AICN (check STENTERPRISE.COM and read those again in the pilot buzz section), the Screenwriters Utopia website has just posted a negative review of the ENTERPRISE pilot script, "Broken Bow". The site is lukewarm on the script, though feels it shows promise, praising the "space battle" sequences and the fact that "technology is realistically aligned with the Trek timeline". The reviewer didn't like the characters of 'Captain Archer' and 'T'Pol', feeling they are "too Trek-stereotypical. We've seen these characters on every single Trek series.[...]" Another problem the reviewer has with the script is "the overwhelming sentimental garbage probably thrown into the script at the last minute. We have warp drive creator, Zefran Cochrane giving us useless sap about "Strange New Worlds..." and unnesessary speeches at the heart of battle." The reviewer then concludes with "Enterprise shows promise. While the script isn't that spectacular, it is a solid vehicle for the series [...]". Read the full review (beware of spoilers and a plot description) here. |

WOAH! Did I read that correctly? Did that really say that Cochrane is in this pilot giving a speach about Strange New Worlds?!?
If all this is true.. it's already shot the timeline. Cochrane isn't even supposed to be around. He invented warp drive in 2061, 90 years before the timeframe for Enterprise. It's not likely he lived THAT long. Second, according to The Star Trek Encyclopedia, he disappeared in 2117 at the age of 87 and was presumed dead. Now he's alive and kicking giving speaches in 2151 at the extrapolated age of 121?!? B & B have already screwed the series and the timeline with the pilot. Quite impressive to deal two death blows at once guys!

It won't be the first time I am accused of that, but I like that "sentimental crap" that everyone keeps bad mouthing. It is the center core of the Trek Mythos. Space battles are not Trek, they can be an exciting part of Trek, but the "sentimental crap" about exploring strange new worlds, etc. is Trek at its core.

like many of the fears of the fans have been for naught. The technology seems fair, the characters seem classic, even Archer gives us another Kirk to look forward to. Overall, it sounds promising. I agree with the fans who say that the Klingon rescue storyline may interfere with the accepted timeline (storyline continuities are important), but overall it looks like this might be a good show. The guy admits that he didn't like everything about the script and still gave it a 7.9 out of 10. That's good for something you don't entirely like. I for one feel better about all of this now.

then I say "bravo!" Have they forgot that it was The Great Bird's vision to have mankind press forward on the even keel..yes, I can hear people right now carp about character tensions and so on and so forth. I like it if Archer is familiar. Star Trek, but its very nature, is familiar. I for one will not be put out when the main themes of teh show demonstrate a consistent theme with Gene R.'s vision. NOT EVERYTHING has to be slam bang.
Sometimes I get the feeling that some "of you" would have rejected the first TOS pilot for the same reasons NBC did in '66.
Curious: how many "of you" were even at fetus stage in 1966?

Script review?

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't take too seriously the opinions of people based on scripts.
Lines could look flat, but if delivered by a credible actor, they could be very effective.

He gave the script a 7.9 out of a possible 10, and implores the reader to join him in watching this show. I'd place that a hair above lukewarm, and certainly not bringing Enterprise "down to Earth".
