ET Online has uploaded a segment of tonight's feature with Scott Bakula on the sets already. The feature includes a transcript of the interview as well as the video of Scott and Mark Steinas on the bridge of the Enterprise in Windows Media format. The video can be downloaded here. Here's part of the transcript:
SCOTT BAKULA: I am, I am the first captain of the first Starship to go out into space.
MARK: Explain that, because there's been some before you.
SCOTT: That's right. This is 150 years from today; this is 2151, 100 years before Kirk and Spock. So we are the first. We've just figured out how to use the propulsion system and we are going out in warp speed for the first time.
MARK: So you have the whole beaming thing taken care of?
SCOTT: Oh no, I can't tell you about the beaming thing.
MARK: Oh, there's no "Beam me up, Scotty"?
SCOTT: No, there won't be that for me. That would be redundant. There will be surprises. What's really fun about this is, because it's ahead of Kirk and Spock, there are references to things that, if you've seen the show, you'll get a kick out of. They're kind of inside things that people know what the outcome is, but we're still in the developmental stage of that. So you'll see some things and say, "Oh, it's the first time they ever did that; it's the first time they thought of that." There's that kind of fun stuff, which I think will be fun, not only for the people who know the show really well, but also for newcomers.
MARK: Are you a newcomer to the show, or did you watch while growing up?
SCOTT: I watched while I was growing up.
Tonight on the program there is sure to be more of the Enterprise sets, and TrekWeb will do out best at getting that video to you. |

I am scared

Reading these posts scares me...I am as big a Star Trek fan as anyone, but it is still fiction. Many of the decisions were made for a production reason, or a storytelling reason, the fact that the designers did not check every detail with everything that has ever been written or every sentence ever uttered in over 600 hours of TV and movies does not make them bad people.
The bridge looks like it does because the technology is available. Today's naval vessels have hundreds of monitors in their CIC's and brigdes. They would have had monitors in TOS but the cost was prohibitive and Roddenberry selected to pay extras to have the ship more lived in, instead of spending it on bells and whistles for the set.
As to the ready room being too "TNG", navy ships have ready rooms just off the bridge so the CO can confer with his staff in private. Moreover, from a production standpoint, it allows for the Captain to have a conversation with someone without having to do a transition to his quarters or a informal chat in the turbolift (like Kirk always had to do).
Another example of technology being flexible for the sake of storytelling is the shields. Over the years we have seen plenty of aliens, stellar phenomena, and unknown energies that have brought the shields to 70%...40%...10%...Collapse!! It doesn't matter if these are the shields on the Federation Flagship, the original Enterprise, or a shuttlecraft. The purpose of shields is to heighten the drama and put the characters in jeopardy. The shields on ENT will be no different. Its about storytelling.
In the end that's what I will be looking for in ENT. If we have another show with anomaly/particles of the week, or silliness in the vein of Voyager's ridiculous holodeck episodes, I will be very let down. If we get solid storytelling and characters like we have seen in episodes of TOS, TNG, DS9, and (occasionaly) VOY, I will enjoy it.

"Trials and Tribble-ations" that the mid 23rd century look was intentional. Maybe Lawrence Marvick was a retro type of guy like Tom Paris, and had a thing for the 1960's.

I just saw the thing on TV and WOW, was it great looking. The thing ooooozes metal masculinity(sp?)! The beige tone also appears a cool bronze when seen on video. I assume that with the right lighting for filming, it will look just fine!!
WOW. I like.

Too much...beigey/brass...interior...exterior...going...into...beige...overload...
I mean, I don't want it to look like something out of Austin Powers, and yeah, it's supposed to be cruder looking, but does it all have to be so monochromatic? A nuclear power plant is more colorful than this. I hated Voyager's grayscale palette, this isn't much better... pickpickpickbitchbitchbitchwhinewhinewhine

I HATE STREAMING VIDEO!

I have a really slow connection (56K modem over a crappy rural phone line), so whenever I stream video it's extremely blocky and slow. I can hardly make out the chair, much less any details of the set. Can some enterprising fan with broadband and media-conversion abilities convert this clip to .mov or some other downloadable format, so I (and others in my situation) can see what's going on? Pretty please?

Great Bridge!

Well, I just downloaded the ET segment and my jaw dropped at seeing the bridge.
It is huge! I love how they combined the bridge of the original Enterprise and the Defiant. It looks like they just put the conference room in the back of the bridge, which is an idea they have had going all the way back to the early designs of the Enterprise-D bridge. I'm glad they were finally able to incorporate that.
Too bad I won't be able to see the show at all. Damn you Fox 31!

Hmm, so Berman and co went onto some Submarines to get the ideas for the sets then?
So, this series is going to be "SeaQuest Trek 2151" ?
Couldn't resist that one, the sets look pretty kewl, with the designs of this ship then at least we'll get away from all of those re-occuring storylines of previous Treks. Especially because there are no Holodecks! woo-hoo!

First the ultra-sleek Enterprise and now perhaps the most detailed, realistic, and best looking bridge, I must say I am very excited. The design is reminescent of a Modern day naval destroyer, which is what I always expected and hence its design appears practical as well as retro-TOS. And ofcourse it looks better than TOS tv series NCC-1701 bridge, but if TOS was made today, I bet they would have even surpassed Soveriegn class in design and would have a sharper looking bridge than Voyager. Things with Enterprise are very reminescent of the huge production values change that occured when Ncc-1701 was redesigned as NCC-1701A for big budget movie TPM. I am looking forward to enterprise

Are you really sure you want it to look like TOS?

If they used something similar to the 60's sets, Enterprise would come off as corny looking as The Brady Bunch movie, people dressed like's its 30 years ago stuck in a more "modern" world. Even in Trials and Tribblations, the DS9 crew looked ridiculous in the TOS costumes and on the TOS sets. This isn't a low-budget sci-fi show anymore, they have the cash, let them spend it!
I can imagine the Suliban pointing and laughing..."Nice sideburns, dude!"

Hoping for the best...

but anticipating the worst. I really, REALLY want to get excited about Enterprise. After a closer look at the ship's exterior it does looks more retro than I first thought... and what I've seen of the interior is very encouraging. I WANT to be excited about Scott Bakula being the new Captain (I always liked him in "Leap")... but B & B have gotten our expectations up before, jerked us around and deep disappointment soon followed. B & B loom like a shadow in the background, and no matter how pretty the foreground may be, they do not have my confidence and it is holding me back. So, we will just have to see. I truly hope that my worst fears are proven wrong.

Fairly disappointed

Well, we've now had our first glimpses of the Enterprise interior sets and my reaction is much like that regarding the exterior of the ship: impressive in its own way, but not really reminiscent of TOS, except that it led to the latter series I do see design elements reflected in: VOY, DS9's Defiant bridge, etc. And I think it's obvious from the TV Guide interview that Rick Berman wasn't interested at all in addressing the fascinating design conundrum of designing a modern SF series based on a 60's TV show; instead, all he wants to do is finesse or ignore the issue as much as possible. Given that Eaves and Drexler really love TOS and this was still the best they could do, I sincerely doubt at this point that there will be any serious attempt to carry any continuity with TOS forward in the writing.
Still might be a good show, but I'm starting to write off ENTERPRISE's inherent fun potential as a prequel.

If they let it get out of hand and go around dropping hints left and right it could easily get really lame.

As far as this new bridge looking more advanced than Kirk's, it's only because the real-life technology to make a good looking set has advanced. Face it, if you were to make TOS show today, the set would have functioning monitors rather than backlit transparencies pasted on the wall! That's not what you would want for this show, is it?
The technology as concieved and presented in TOS is more advanced than Enterprise, but the new show will look more realistic than TOS simply because of the time that has passed since the 60's. It's a fact of life and we will have to understand and accept that to enjoy the new show and fit it into our perception of the overall timeline.

New Ent set
By Gamera

The new bridge set looks about like I had hoped and expected: with the basic circular design, but with the computer screens looking more like monitor displays than viewscreens mounted flush with the wall, as in TOS. Also, more metal and surface detail to indicate the equipment is placed in, rather than modularly pre-built and plugged in as Pike's and Kirk's bridge modules.
We can see from this how it might have become more streamlined and smoother as years went by, until Pike's time. It almost looks as if a bridge were built today based on TOS designs, but with real functioning technology on an actual sub or ship. It works for me!
Keep in mind this fact:
That although things may look more advanced, because they are built with a bigger budget and better behind-the-scenes technology, the stuff we are seeing is NOT more advanced than Kirk's time, concept-wise. I think this will be borne out more when we see the show.
I also like the views we have seen of Engineering. Large pipes (probably coolant), ducts, and wire conduits like you would expect to see. I'm getting more excited with every glimpse we get of the ship, interior and exterior.
As for crossover guest stars we could see: Well, how about Guinan? She is alive and well in that time period. It would be fun to have her in a cameo somewhere during the show, to indicate that she is keeping up with the Enterprise, since she knows she will one day meet Picard as a captain of the Enteprise D, from her meeting with him in "Time's Arrow."
A young Sarek, as already mentioned, would be another prime candidate for continuity's sake, as well as a younger T'Pau.
It would also be neat to meet some of the ancestors of the original crew here and there.

A Brave New World

Wow. How fantastic! I've been a Trekkie for over 20 years, and I have nothing but positive feelings for this show. Seeing Bakula walk that bridge, sit in the center seat...he just seemed so at home - like he belonged there. I have a feeling that this is the start of something wonderful.
All you others out there who are going to whine about something in that footage, just sit back relax and enjoy. And remember, just because something exists in a Star Trek book, encyclopedia, or chonology that hasn't aired on the shows or movies, doesn't mean it's cannon. These people have the right to rewrite their history if they want.
OH, and one more thing, did they recycle Janeway's chair? It sure looks like it. I wonder what message is there...

New bridge kinda sterile

The new bridge is very monochromatic and sterile looking, I think, sort of like the bridge from TMP. Of course it may be lit differently in the actual show. I like the darker and richer colors they used (red, black, etc) in the TOS and later movies better. Plus I think the captain's chair looks a little cramped and small. Where's Kirk's throne when you need it?
The plasma displays are cool, and the overall look is very consistent with the other sets and ship exterior, so it looks like they did a good job with consistency. I can't wait to see the ET segments tonight.
