Dept: Voyager

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced its Emmy nominations for the previous television season and 'Voyager' landed eight nods this year, over last year's seven.

Here's a list of the 'Voyager' nods, written up by TrekToday while I was away from the computer as all this news was happening.

Outstanding Costumes For A Series
Costume designer Robert Blackman and Costume Supervisor Carol Kunz were nominated for 'Shattered.' Another nominee in this category was The Lot, which starred Jonathan Frakes (William T. Riker), while the final three nods went to Sex and the City, The Sopranos and Will & Grace.

Outstanding Hairstyling For A Series Hairstylists Josee Normand, Charlotte Parker and Gloria Montemeyor were nominated for 'Prophecy.' The other nominees in this category were The Lot, MADtv, Sex and the City and That 70s Show.

Outstanding Makeup For A Series Makeup artists Michael Westmore, Tina Kalliongis-Hoffman, Scott Wheeler and James Rohland were nominated for their work on the prosthetics in 'The Void.' The other nominees in this category were MADtv, Sex and the City, The Sopranos and The X-Files.

Outstanding Music Composition For A Series (Dramatic Underscore) Voyager received two nominations in this category - one for Dennis McCarthy's work in 'Workforce, Part One' and one for Jay Chattaway in 'Endgame.' The other nominees in this category were The Simpsons, The West Wing and Xena: Warrior Princess.

Outstanding Sound Editing For A Series Supervising Sound Editor Bill Wistrom, Supervising Sound Effects Editor Jim Wolvington, Sound Editors T. Ashley Harvery, Masanobu "Tomi" Tomita and Dale Chaloukian, and Music Editor Gerald Sackman were nominated for 'Endgame, Part Two.' The other nominees in this category were CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, ER, The Fugitive and Third Watch.

Outstanding Special Visual Effects For A Series Voyager received two nominations in this category, for 'Workforce, Part One' and for 'Endgame.' The other nominees were Dark Angel and two episodes of Stargate SG-1. Visual Effects Producer Dan Curry, Visual Effects Supervisor Ronald B. Moore, Visual Effects Coordinator Chad Zimmerman, Visual Effects Compositor Paul Hill, Visual Effects Animator Greg Rainoff, CGI Supervisor David Morton, Computer Animator David Lombardi, Computer Modeler and Animator John Teska and Computer Modeler Brandon MacDougal were nominated for 'Workforce, Part One.' Curry, Moore, Teska and Rainoff, as well as Visual Effects Supervisor Mitch Suskin, Visual Effects Coordinator Art Codron, Visual Effects Compositor Steve Fong, Matte Artist Eric Chauvin and CGI Supervisor Robert Bonchune were nominated for 'Endgame.'

What's up with -that-? I believe it's also more nominations than DS9 ever got in any one of its seasons too. Just goes to show what a concerted advertising campaign and the visibility of a TV network will do for you.

These nominations certainly should only be for technical achievements, that's all Voyager consistently bested other shows with (though not in cinematography - that's been rather uniform for some time). Kate Mulgrew was never going to get a nod, even Jeri Ryan and Robert Picardo were long shots. When has Voyager's writing this year been Emmy-worthy?

Can anyone provide info on the three modern series' Emmy nods and wins?

Emmy Nominations

The sad thing is that Voyager garnered ONLY nominations is technical categories, not in dramatic categories such as acting or writing - and that this is entirely justified. When Star Trek debuted in '66 it was the most daring drama series on television. It really pushed the boundaries and dealt with concepts and issues that other series wouldn't touch. All of Star Trek's later incarnations (with the possible exception of the animated version) have been totally outclassed by their television contemporaries: Hill Street Blues or St Elsewhere in the 80s; LA Law, Chicago Hope in the 90s; NYPD Blue, The Sopranos in the early 2000s. Star Trek's format allows it to do ANYTHING - to break all the rules and throw off all the restraints as it did in 1966. Why doesn't it? It's not the Roddenberry "perfect people" problem. Weren't the DS9 and Voyager mixed-crew formats supposed to cure this? They didn't. Star Trek has been Junior Television for well over a decade. It no longer dares to go where other programs won't. It no longer breaks new ground. It's just an amiable hour of TV where it used to be the best hour of TV. Eight Emmy nominations? Not good enough. Even though the original show never got a single Emmy, it did get nominations in the dramatic categories. So come on, "Enterprise!" Throw off the shackles! Do it again! Boldly go where no show has gone before! There's nothing to stop you!

Consolation: In Inside Star Trek the authors report that there was no Music award in 1967 because no music in any of the shows came up to "the standards of television". The themes for Star Trek and Mission Impossible were amongst these "loser" tunes - and both still feature in the latest incarnations of their respective programs and are two of the most widely recognised theme tunes ever composed. So what do the Emmy people know!

"Endgame" nominations

I didn't think the CGI FX for "Endgame" were even that good. For the most part, they were flat and uninspired. And I agree with the poster below that "Buffy" definitely got screwed over... That season finale kicked, I can't wait to see what UPN is gonna do with (or to) it.

I read the nominations this morning and was quite shocked that Voyager got 8 nominations and Buffy the Vampire Slayer got didly squat.
What does that say about the Industry? Berman over there on the Academys Casting/ Voting Couch?

OPINION POLLS
ENTERPRISE has been revealed this week and we'd like to know how you would rate the show so far based on the new Enterprise NX-01, the interior set design, the new costumes, and any other info that you may already possess!
(A) Spectacular! The first looks offered this week reveal a series with immense potential and more excitement for Star Trek than I've felt since the days of TNG!
(B) Impressive, but cautiously so! What I've seen so far has promise and most of it is in the right direction, but I will restrain my jubilation for after the premiere!
(C) Uninteresting! The photos I've seen so far reveal a series that lacks serious originality in artistic design and I am open-minded yet skeptical of its potential!
(D) Horrifying! What we've been shown so far is unoriginal and unexciting, revealing a series unexcuseably violative of continuity and poorly developed; Paramount will be lucky if I tune in!
