Unauthorized Play Follows Roddenberry's Life as Womanizer

Dept: General Star Trek

The Skullduggery theater company has informed TrekWeb of a new play that might interest Trek fans, 'I Am Star Trek', "The totally unauthorised version of the life & works of Gene Roddenberry, creator of 'Star Trek'."

The play follows "Gene's life-long mission: to seduce every woman he meets, to cheat every friend he makes and to boldly create the greatest science fiction TV show ever.

"A new no-holds-barred comedy about the life and works of 'Star Trek' creator, Gene Roddenberry. The play launches the audience on a cosmic cruise through the euphoric highs and dismal lows of Roddenberry's career and, for good measure, takes in some scenes from Star Trek episodes and films along the way.

"The Show's mission is to boldly go where no show has gone before - into the depths of Roddenberry's character. Gene is most generously described as a 'complex individual'. To say he was merely a visionary fails to do him justice: he was a committed humanist but also an inveterate womaniser. Not content merely to betray his best friends, he stole their ideas, too. We celebrate his creativity, marvel at his high warp-factor personality and probe gingerly into some of the less tasteful recesses of his character.

"Roddenberry believed that 'Star Trek' is a show about 'optimism and people living up to their greatest potential'. Ironic really, given that most of us think it's about tight costumes and ham acting.

"9 actors play over 50 characters as we meet Hollywood hotshot producers, Trekkies, Gene's women and his loyal scriptwriters, as well as Captain Kirk, Mr Spock and many other favourite Trek characters in classic moments from 'Star Trek' episodes and films. "I am Star Trek" is produced by Skullduggery Theatre Company, a London-based professional theatre company.

"This is Skullduggery's second appearance at the Edinburgh Festival. Our production of 'Dracula' at the Greyfriars Kirk Housee in 1999 attracted sell out audiences and received a four star review from 'The Scotsman'. Skullduggery were invited to appear at the New York Fringe last year, winning the Overall Excellence Award for ensemble Performance.

'I Am Star Trek' will be at the Edinburgh Fringe August 1-26 in the UK. You can reach the box office at 0131 226 0000 and get more info on the play here.

St. Gene, Zefram Cochrane, and public domain

I think the best commentary on the difference between the fan vision of Gene Roddenberry and the real Gene was in "First Contact." The scene with Riker and Cochrane in the cockpit of the Phoenix could easily have been a fan meeting GR, who certainly would have been happy to retire to a tropical island filled with naked women. That said, Riker was right, too -- he did have a vision.

As for the question of this play's legality -- I think that as long as it is presented as a "behind-the-scenes" story, and as long as it doesn't veer too far from established fact, nether Paramount nor Majel Barrett-Roddenberry should be able to complain. I'm no expert on intellectual property law, but I think that historical events are public domain; the only way that this theater company might get in trouble is if they were putting on "a Star Trek play", a play set in the Star Trek universe or something. The only thing I'm not sure about is whether it's OK that they use "Star Trek" in the name of the play. But as long as there aren't any out-and-out lies about GR, MB-R wouldn't be able to sue them. And from what I've read, there's enough juicy truth out there that the playwright wouldn't have to make up falsehoods.

Harlan Ellison wrote this play?

Probably only a matter of time before "I am Captain Kirk" gets made with financing by George Takei and James Doohan

When will Paramount sue?

This sounds like it could be a heck of a lot of fun, not to mention fairly interesting. Rumors of Gene's obsessive womanizing and constant consumption of marijuana have been circulating for years, but have always taken a back seat to glowing tales of "Roddenbery, the Visionary". I'd imagine that the keepers of Gene's legacy, (or the pimpers of his name, depending upon your point of view) will be racing to their British solicitors to shut this down. Pity it'll never see a stage in the US.

OPINION POLLS
ENTERPRISE has been revealed this week and we'd like to know how you would rate the show so far based on the new Enterprise NX-01, the interior set design, the new costumes, and any other info that you may already possess!
(A) Spectacular! The first looks offered this week reveal a series with immense potential and more excitement for Star Trek than I've felt since the days of TNG!
(B) Impressive, but cautiously so! What I've seen so far has promise and most of it is in the right direction, but I will restrain my jubilation for after the premiere!
(C) Uninteresting! The photos I've seen so far reveal a series that lacks serious originality in artistic design and I am open-minded yet skeptical of its potential!
(D) Horrifying! What we've been shown so far is unoriginal and unexciting, revealing a series unexcuseably violative of continuity and poorly developed; Paramount will be lucky if I tune in!
