Ryan to Teach at 'Boston Public'

The Associated Press Wednesday, July 18, 2001; 6:27 AM

PASADENA, Calif. –– A former android will be teaching at "Boston Public" next season.

Jeri Ryan, best known as the half-robotic Seven of Nine on "Star Trek: Voyager," has agreed to join the ensemble cast of the quirky high-school drama, Fox officials said Tuesday.

Ryan, 33, will play a disgruntled former corporate lawyer who leaves her practice to become a teacher at the troubled urban school, said Gail Berman, Fox entertainment president.

"Her teacher will be wealthier than the other teachers, having made money in her corporate life," Berman added.

Ryan's character, Ronnie Cooke, will clash with the other teachers because she tries to bring her money into the classroom by purchasing supplies her colleagues can't afford, Berman said.

"There is a tremendous amount of drama and friction she will add to the show," Berman said.

What's the difference between this character and 7? Both went from working with the darkest, most evil creatures in the universe to working with the good guys.

Some dialog from the first Boston Public staring Jeri Ryan as Ronnie Cooke:

JR: WE ARE THE TEACHER. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE. YOU WILL BE EDUCATED.

Student 1: Ms. Cooke, we think education should be more reading books. This curriculum doesn't allow for creativity or self-expression.

JR: CREATIVITY IS IRRELEVANT. SELF-EXPRESSION IS IRRELEVANT. YOUR NEURAL PATHWAYS WILL BE ALTERED. YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED INTO SOCIETY AND ACCEPT MIDDLE-CLASS VALUES.

Student 1: I refuse to become another faceless drone!

JR: YOU WILL COMPLY OR YOU WILL BE SENT TO THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE AT SPACIAL GRID 001 FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF DISCIPLINARY PROTOCOL 237.

Student 2: Ms. Cooke, may I go to the lavatory?

JR: YOU ARE WEAK; PATHETIC. PERHAPS YOU SHOULD RETURN TO YOUR MATURATION CHAMBER.

Student 2: But I really have to go to the bathroom!!!

JR: BATHROOM IS IRRELEVANT

OPINION POLLS
ENTERPRISE has been revealed this week and we'd like to know how you would rate the show so far based on the new Enterprise NX-01, the interior set design, the new costumes, and any other info that you may already possess!
(A) Spectacular! The first looks offered this week reveal a series with immense potential and more excitement for Star Trek than I've felt since the days of TNG!
(B) Impressive, but cautiously so! What I've seen so far has promise and most of it is in the right direction, but I will restrain my jubilation for after the premiere!
(C) Uninteresting! The photos I've seen so far reveal a series that lacks serious originality in artistic design and I am open-minded yet skeptical of its potential!
(D) Horrifying! What we've been shown so far is unoriginal and unexciting, revealing a series unexcuseably violative of continuity and poorly developed; Paramount will be lucky if I tune in!
