First Report of 'The Motion Picture: Director's Edition'

Posted: 13:17:26 on July 24 2001

Dept: General Star Trek

There is a report at TheDigital Bits web site from the recent Comic-Con about ST:TMP on DVD. Here is the excerpt:

"Finally, I attended a presentation on the upcoming Star Trek: The Motion Picture Director's Cut, with director Robert Wise. We saw glimpses of some of the new special effects shots. There are some 90 altered shots in all, 20% of which are completely new shots, while the rest are simply digitally cleaned and recomposited shots. The new Dolby Digital 5.1 mix includes many newlt added sound effects, but nearly all of them were originally created for the movie and were unused due to lack of time. Expect the 2-disc set to be officially announced in the next couple of weeks (for an expected November 6th street date)."

New opening sequence and NX-01?

What I want to know is if there is a new opening credits sequence. I've said many times before that the simple white letters on black background is just not good enough for a movie of this caliber.
One other thing... Anyone think they'll replace the portrait in the Rec Hall of the SS Enterprise to the "new" NX-01 Enterprise? THAT would be cool.

On VHS? Why? VHS is dying. Why would you want it on VHS?
Go into Blockbuster and see how many VHS tapes they have for sale that are used. Even they are booting them.
Get a DVD player if you dont have one already. They are less then 200.00
Cant wait for this to come out.
Wish they would do a Star Trek 2 special edition though.

Are they going to put this new Director's Edition on VHS or is just going to be on DVD? Does anybody know?

2-Disc Set?

Folks,

A 2-disc set? That's interesting. I have not heard of The Director's Edition being a 2-disc set before. If true, that would seem to suggest that there's either two different editions of the movie included in the set, or that Paramount has made the surprising move of including alot of extras in the set.

Even though The Motion Picture is a relatively long movie, the entire film, as well as some extras -- even a director's audio commentary -- could fit onto a single disc. Heck, even the original and the updated versions of the film could fit on a single disc if it was a double-sided disc. The only 2-disc DVD set I've purchased to date is Independence Day and that ran to two discs because they included an entire disc of extras -- cut footage, behind the scenes information, "making of" featurettes, etc. I certainly hope the same thing is happening with TDE, but given Paramount's history of releasing virtually nothing extra with their DVDs, I'm not optimistic about it.

Take care!

You will be watching ENTERPRISE because...
It's a 'Star Trek' series after all, I don't care about the producers, actors, or writers!
Scott Bakula. He is a fan-favorite because of his work on 'Quantum Leap'.
Jolene Blalock . Sexploitation be damned, she is hotter than Jeri Ryan!
It's not set in the over-used 24th Century, full of tecnobabble, quantum anomalies or Borg [yet]!
If nothing else, the UPN promos have done it for me!
Who said I will be watching? Berman and Braga will destroy 'Star Trek' with this prequel concept!
