First Photo of 'Doctor Phlox' Reveals Cardassian-like Makeup

Posted: 08:29:06 on July 25 2001

Dept: Enterprise | www.stenterprise.com

The German site TrekZone has posted the first photo of 'Doctor Phlox', played by actor John Billingsley, from the internal UPN promotional tape sent to affiliates for ENTERPRISE. The image reveals the character's makeup to be primarily comprised of cranial ridges, as previously reported, allowing for a generous portion of the actor's face to be seen, much like the Cardassian makeup.

I reckon the pic is a collection of features from many aliens. As people have said, their are Cardassian ridges, but the forehead looks distinctly Ktarian ('The Game', TNG) These bits have been added to a pic of Rick Berman's interview. what do you reckon?

Hasn't anybody in the makeup/design section ever considered that at least one of the universe's many humanoid races will have something less on their faces than we humans do, rather than a whole lot of useless cranial ridges more. What about an alien that has no nose, that "smells" with his toung, or his skin has tastebuds over it so that it can taste without danger of poison.

You could cover up the nose or eyes with rubber, the mouth would be an acoustic problem, as well as hard to breath through, which is fine coz everyone needs a mouth.

Just copy someone form Farscape or B5, for crying out loud. I'm just tired of aliens that look like humans with crap on their faces!

Phlox.... Neelix.... Cardassian....?

Okay... I will kind of go where the other posters have gone before.... but I will hold final judgement for the first episode...
I REALLY would have liked to see a previously known race, like an Andorian, Tellerite or TOS era UFP member alien on board as the doctor....

First- I donīt think that this picture shows a finished make-up.

Second- If this is realy the Doctor and if we will see him like in the series, this is the first detail I donīt like. I think so...

Third- This is for one special person: DONTīT PANIC! Iīve got a sense of humour. Itīs part of my job an usually I get my money from that. Donīt judge me on some few lines...

So if the Enterprise crew has this guy running around the ship on a regular basis, why is it they are supposedly so SHOCKED to see a Klingon for the first time? Is it just the long hair?

Personally, I don't see a dramatic difference between the two races -- especially from the point of view of a 22nd century human.

No one listens! I will repeat myself here again. Berman and Co. are not going to give us anything new and fresh. "They are sadly going where they have gone before..."
They have just put a different ship, time frame and cast onto the scene. They have nothing different than what they have been giving us for the past several years. Fro whatever reasons they are incapable of giving us anything but what they have been giving us. I'm not trying to insult anyone here. It is just a reality.
This is so sad it is so ridiculous. They keep pitching this bull to us that this show is going to be different and we are all supposed to believe it. That guy doesn't look like Garick does he? What a joke!
I don't!
Same old stuff!
It's so sad to see Trek in the toilet with no hope of getting out.
Oh well...I'm sure I'll here from ensign ro-ro your boat on this one.
Signed
A greatly dissappointed Trekker.

Please recycle.

the following is for the ENTERPRISE team:
For god's sake people, Enterprise is not in the 24th century! Will you please stop recycling designs from the 24th century, first the ship, then the uniforms (coloured sholders - tres voyager!), and now you're ripping off Cardassian makeup! I imagined Phlox to be sort of blue-green and scalie, with sort of a chamelion kind of feature that lets him change colour (as well as be all double jointed and stuff).I'm finished.
Please do not take any part of this comment as an insult as it is intended to be purely a documentation of my thoughts and opinions.

I wonder....

Hmmm, DS9 is near the cardassian border and in the pilot of DS0 they mention that it's right near the frontier of federation space as in very very far from Earth.

So, the federation maybe didn't know about the Cardassians in Kirks time and certainly not in this time line. It is plausable that this doctor ere is was on those "Oooh, I'm the only known member of my species, I don't know where I came from, lost as an orphan" sort a thing. Of course the viewers all know where he came from. Could be cool, or frustrating. Or it could just lack of imagination in the make-up department "We need to think of a brand new completely unique Alien." "How about identicle to humans in everyway except for a green spot on their chin?" "Fantastic!!"

I guess I have to wait and see the final product, but I was hoping for something different. I was thinking of Phlox as being bald, orange skinned, with dark spots, and some kind of "sheen"...kinda like a salamander. Add to that some yellow cat-eye contact lenses....

Don't know...aren't people tired cranial ridges? There have to be better ways to make an alien...

I know that this may be tough to answer, but is John Billingsley the customer in the cell phone commercial who says "enough with the cool, more about the features"? Kind of a nerdy character...anyone...anyone?

Kinda boring. Either Michael Westmore doesn't like to create non-brown colored aliens very often or Rick Berman doesn't like the idea of a red or blue skinned alien gracing the screens every week.

Maybe he is a Cardassian
By dragonfire () at 12:05:02 on July 25

I don't recall if TNG or DS9 ever established when first contact was made with the Cardassians. What we know for sure is that the Federation was at war with Cardassia sometime early in Cheif O'Brien's Starfleet career (The Wounded). And that at one time, the Cardassian's were a peaceful and spiritual people with a fine appreciation for art, architecture and archeology (Chain of Command Part 2).

Could be interesting to see there is an agreeable relationship with Earth pre-Ferderation. It would also be VERY cool to see Bajor in it's hey day... before the Cardassian's occupied and raped the planet. A thriving Bajor and peaceful Cardassia could actually make for some interesting drama if the writers take into account what is to come. A tradegy that doesn't know it's a tragedy.

I hope Phlox doesn't ruin the show

I know it's way too premature to think something like this, but am I the only who looks at this picture and aside from the completely unimaginitive makeup, thinks that Phlox may be the loser of ENT? I just don't want this character to be making stupid faces and idiotic jokes week after week and make us embarrassed for his scenes. That could make this show lose credibility with non-Trekkers REAL fast.

Also, has anyone considered that maybe this makeup is intentional and his "exotic species" will actually turn out to be the Cardassians? I don't know for what reason they'd do that, but I think the makeup is quite derivative.

Doesn't look complete...
By toasteroven () at 10:39:36 on July 25

It looks like only the facial appliances are done... and I doubt an alien would be wearing a blue checkered shirt. Probably a shot of Billingsly half-way through the makeup process.... I remember seeing a pic of Michael Dorn half-way through.. and he looked nothing like Worf yet.

BTW.. if you go frame per frame in the scene with Tucker walking into the alien bar in the "Rock Promo" that everybody is buzzing about, you can vaugely make out a very strange looking dude in an Enterprise uniform behind him with a gigantic head... could this be Phlox with full makeup?

(I downloaded the 5MB version from the German site before it went dead... can't really make it out on the 1MB version)

Cardassian?

Look, I am looking forward to Enterprise with an excited and open mind, giving some slack to the whole continuity issues, but come on.

Before I even read the article, the first thing that popped into my head was, "Oh, God. Is he going to be a Cardassian?"

I understand that after 15 years of modern-day Trek alien designs are starting to resemble one another, but this looks like a Cardassian with a bad haircut. I'm sure I'll warm to the character once we see some completed footage, but I think Michael Westmore really dropped the ball on this one.

He looks a bit like Neelix mark 2. Maybe it's just the quality of the picture but I don't see the Cardassian resemblance.
