Earth In Transition, 'Trek X' In Trouble?, Fav Guest Stars, Animated Series's Canonicity, ENT's Target Audience, and Doctor Phlox an Afterthought? These and More In This Week's STAR TREK BBS Discussions!

Dept: Star Trek BBS Update

Here are some of this week's most interesting discussions on the STAR TREK BBS...

  • Trek X: Smelling Disaster
by VoR, who has posted a brief commentary stating that new Trek X director Stuart Baird may find trouble trying to direct Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner, two actors who according to the article, have their own feelings about how a Trek film should be made.

  • The types of governments on the different Star Trek worlds
by JimMorrison, who has started an intriguing discussion about just how the economics of the future operate and whether we're going to see more of how Earth makes its transition from war-torn world to paradise in the new series ENTERPRISE.

  • Any previous Trek guest stars you'd like to see on ENT?
by Ensign-Ro-Your-Boat... from Harris Yulim to Tony Todd to David Warner, nominate your favorite Trek guest star to appear in ENTERPRISE; or tell the BBS why you don't like the same guest stars to appear over and over.

  • Was the Animated Star Trek part of true Trek Cannon?
by JimMorrison, who has started a discussion about the canonicity of The Animated Series, relying on past comments from Gene Roddenberry and others to determine which installments, if any, are considered part of the true Star Trek universe.

  • NX-01's Look and the Trek Timeline--whoa, what a mess!
by Jakers, who suggests that the Enterprise-E's appearance in the 21st century could explain some of the post-TOS-looking designs appearing in the pre-TOS set ENTERPRISE.

  • Snap Poll: Is Janeway insane?
by Mr. Hippo, who asks the simple question we've all often pondered. Janeway fans better get in there to defend her soon!

  • ENT will have no appeal out of its target audience
by MLE, who has made the broad and sweeping statement without having seen the show, that ENTERPRISE is going to turn off young kids and their parents with too much sex and violence and serious adults with "pop" sounding contemporary music. Think this is premature or right on target? Check it out.

  • Where else can we go from here...?
by falcon who believes that with today's technology, non-humanoid aliens should be attempted more often because it's more than likely that true aliens won't be humanoids as depicted traditionally in Trek.

  • Phlox: A sign of weakness?
by Archangel, who thinks that Doctor Phlox may perhaps be a little under-conceived this late in the game and worries that he may become another underused "funny" character ala Neelix.

  • Originality in Star Trek...
by Captain_Stinray, who says that originality is near death in Star Trek and proclaims that ENTERPRISE must add running character-arcs week to week and even main character mortality to revive the franchise and keep the DS9/VOY-alienated viewers from tuning out yet again.

Trek X in trouble. It doesn't surprise one bit!

When actors or even studio honchos are telling you how are a Star Trek film should be made. You know you're in trouble. At least Leonard Nimoy had a good point when he turned down ST: Generations. He should be commended for avoiding what has got to be one of the worst sequels ever made. This series hasn't seen a good film since the heydays of TMP and Khan. Getting an experienced director like Baird isn't going to bring back the legion of Star Trek fans like me who have given up on this worn-out series. They tried to jump start the X-Files with Robert Patrick but unfortunately it hasn't boosted that show's waning popularity. Star Trek X looks like it's going to be more of the same staid, predictable, studio manufactured crap. I could be wrong, but I seriously doubt it. Somebody pull the plug before Berman and Co. unleash another monstrosity upon the viewing public just like Lucas did with The Phantom Menace. Pitiful!

The NX-01 Enterprise and her place in a new frontier
By Lost () at 20:22:20 on July 30

From my understanding of the NX-01 Enterprise, she's a test bed starship, not a thurough bread. She's about.. twice the mass of the Defiant (round guess) and while I have every confidence that who ever designed her intended her to be able to survive her first mission into the unknown. BTW, I agree with the contaminated FC timeline theory someone else proposed, but take it in stride thinking to myself "this was they way it happened in the first place, since the time loop had to be complete before it even happened".

Now, my point in this discussion though is that its my beleife that they are going to find themselves out gunned and out matched and probably always outnumbered. I'm assuming that in this era warp 5 is an impressive thing for any race (maybe not the Vulcans, or the Klingons who both have been using warp drive longer than mankind (but then again, maybe not)), but surely other races out there have forcefeilds and working transporters, after all, races in the delta quadrant independantly developed the technology (even though it would appear that humans somehow managed this pretty early since the Talaxians had traveled vast distances but didn't posses transporter tech).

I'm thinking that the NX-01 is going to constantly be being refined. Technology getting kinks worked out, new inventions implemented, improvements made here and there, and maybe even aquired or traded technology being installed. I'm praying they get sheilds at some point, because I can understand why the Federation feared the Klingons later if they possesed the technology first to send a SHUTTLE as far as Earth.

I'm also hoping that the production staff plays it for all its worth. This primitive starship should be rather fragile and vulnerable.. decompression might not be a problem (can they replicate atmosphere? it would seam a simpler matter than pasta), but holes in the hull are, and if they do go with multi episode story arcs right from the start, I see the NX-01 getting in a fire fight far away from home, and having to limp back from Klingon space. It would make for a real "disasterous first contact" like people keep quoting McCoy.

As for her mission, I think that the Enterprise will probably do alot of exploration and first contact during the series, but also having do deal with an unstable and dangerous part of space. None of the spoilers have mentioned the Romulans at all, but acording to Star Trek cannon, the Federation was born after a war with the Romulans (who had cloaking devices even in this time frame).. Does this mean that the new series is going to have a DS9 meats TOS quality to it? I'm kinda hoping for that actually, because that would be blending two of the best trains of thought Star Trek has touched on.

If they don't get it right though, I'll keep watching just to see Captain Archer getting in over his head at the begining of every episode and saying "oh boy" as they go to opening credits :)

oh.. speaking of which. As for our new Captain and his rumored affair with a Vulcan..

"Looking for love in all the wrong places.. "
LOL

thanks guys. Look forward to the discussion.

You will be watching ENTERPRISE because...
It's a 'Star Trek' series after all, I don't care about the producers, actors, or writers!
Scott Bakula. He is a fan-favorite because of his work on 'Quantum Leap'.
Jolene Blalock . Sexploitation be damned, she is hotter than Jeri Ryan!
It's not set in the over-used 24th Century, full of tecnobabble, quantum anomalies or Borg [yet]!
If nothing else, the UPN promos have done it for me!
Who said I will be watching? Berman and Braga will destroy 'Star Trek' with this prequel concept!
