'Birth of the Federation' Update In The Works

Dept: Gaming

TrekWeb received this press release:

Introduction of the project known as Birth of the Federation Series II: A major update to the orginial game - Birth of the Federation.

The 'Birth of the Federation Series II' staff is proud to officially announce the creation of the 'Birth of the Federation Series II' project. The project has been approved to proceed by Activision and we are presently in pre-production of the project.

'Birth of the Federation Series II' is a major update to the original game, in which a great number of features will be included, and a number of errors will be resolved throughout the game. A few features will include advanced scenario options, the addition of the Dominion, and deluxe battle interface options. Our attention will be mostly directed to adding game features, although we will resolve errors such as the memory issue within the original game.

At present time, we are preparing the blueprints of the production features, and determining the schedule for completion. We expect this update to reignite the popularity of 'Birth of the Federation', as we breath new life into the game. Gamers will be able to monitor the progress of the project through our website: http://www.geocities.com/botfii/. As production of the project continues fans will be able to play an active role by adding their suggestions and ideas to perfect the result 'Birth of the Federation Series II' will have upon the gaming community.

We expect to release the complete list of all the intended enhancements to 'Birth of the Federation Series II' by Wednesday, August 8th.

I hope they don't mess up the dominion

The Dominion would be the obvious new power. But I guess I'd need some clearing up too if they're gonna be accurate. The Dominion is started by the Founders, so they would be the primary race. It's my impression that the Jem'hadar are a race that's part of the Dominion, like the Vorta, and make up much of their military wing. Is this how it is, or did the Dominion create the Jem'hadar? I ask this because the Jem'hadar would make a very helpful minor race, with their military bonuses. But if they are a minor race, then what ships would the Dominion use? I assume the ship design we see on DS9 are Jem'hadar, rather than Founder... does anyone know where I'm going with this? If you do, reply :)

This is excellent news! BOTF is probably my favorite Trek game, so I'm happy.

For everyone that hates the Borg, just turn them off. With the patch you have an option to add something to the INI file. I do every time, not because I'm cheating but becuase the Borg are just ridiculous and spoil the game. Obviously others think the same, otherwise the option wouldn't have been added.

I don't like to play as the Federation, the common people don't like it when I bombard planets.

Welcome news...

It's basically a great game (just got done playing it again), if they can polish up the features and work out the bugs like memory leak, insane random events that give you no hope of survival (Borg Fleets coming in turn 40, when you're only at level 3), and autobuild that completely fails to work after a few turns, that'll be a major improvement. The other features mentioned here would be excellent, too.

I guess this is a mod type project, though, since the official site is a GeoCities site.

I await with interest.

I'm a bit confused...The game was originally released by Microprose...Why is Activision working on the update?

...but very welcome news. There are very few games that I go back to once I'm finished with them, but I do find myself going back to BOTF fairly regurarly. Despite some of the micromanagement it's a solid title and a fun game, mainly because while there are strategies to use victory isn't assured each time you play the game.

I think playing with the Borg and Dominion will be cool as hell and will breathe new life into an already good game.

I expect it to be probably about $20, not bad really. I also hope that they create a fix that keeps some random events from happening until much later in the game. I've had the Crystal Entity tour my worlds on the 14th turn for God's sake. Keep that stuff from happening until I have at least a chance of offering resistance.

Looking forward to it.

And for the next game...

How about another mission game like Final Unity, or something along those lines. And while we're at it, how about a game based on the Enterprise series. I really liked Starfleet Accademy, something more to that would be great. And finally, how about a game that uses input from fans of the games. I'm not looking for Doom knock-offs, just imaginative games set in the Trek universe.

this is unexpected.

Approved, but not supported by Activision?

Well, should be interesting. Wonder if it's going to be free.

BOTF was a good trek fame, not great, but enjoyable. several things need to be fixed, 1 the micromanagement needs fine-tuning, fix the autobuild. 2. you should be able to select terraform all available planets instead of doing them one by one. 3. all minor races should be available all the time and more minor races should be included. 4. a larger galaxy. and 5, the borg should not appear so early in the game!

Managing more than three planets was a real pain if you wanted them to reach a decent level of development. When you learn new science the structures should automatically upgrade, even if they operate at a reduced effectiveness while autoevolving.

Each turn shouldn't take twenty five minutes when you can play for literally hundreds of turns.

You will be watching ENTERPRISE because...
It's a 'Star Trek' series after all, I don't care about the producers, actors, or writers!
Scott Bakula. He is a fan-favorite because of his work on 'Quantum Leap'.
Jolene Blalock . Sexploitation be damned, she is hotter than Jeri Ryan!
It's not set in the over-used 24th Century, full of tecnobabble, quantum anomalies or Borg [yet]!
If nothing else, the UPN promos have done it for me!
Who said I will be watching? Berman and Braga will destroy 'Star Trek' with this prequel concept!
