Robert Duncan McNeill Says ENTERPRISE to Have "More Humor"

At the recent Slanted Fedora Convention held in Washington, DC last weekend, Voyager actor Robert Duncan McNeill talked briefly about his upcoming directorial stint on ENTERPRISE.

"I've been [on the Enterprise set] twice since Voyager ended - once just to say "hi" to the crew, from Voyager" he said "Most of the crew from our show has gone over to the new show. And then, one day I came over just to meet the actors and hang out for a little while, since I'm directing in September [...]"

According to McNeill, the new series will have a lighter tone. "I know they're going for a lot of humor" he said."And Scott Bakula is very funny. The one scene that I saw them shooting, there was more humor, that kind of goofy humor, than we tended to do on our show. So I think they kind of going back to The Original Series in a way."

TrekToday posted the full report here.

Every time the concept of humour is brought up in regards to the current Trek franchises i cannot help but cringe. My head lulls with embarassingly childish and immature gag humor from both Star Trek: Insurrection and (at times) Star Trek: First Contact. What makes me so uncomfortable is that I don't think the current Trek writers are very good at comedy sequences. Lest we forget the Klingon pimple (a "Gorch" [sp] i believe)!!! Lest we forget the "flotation device"!!! Lest we forget the Doctor's "allergesic cream"!!!

The best Star Trek comedy is its situational humour not its gag humour. Cases and points: Star Trek IV, "Trouble With Tribbles", "A Piece of the Action" (although Shatners rendition of a mobster has much to be desired), and a few of those ferengi episodes from DS9. I think the current writers are capable of good humour; i just hope they avoid the gag humour that often detracts and distracts rather than entertains.

funny TOS ep

One of my favorite TOS eps was "Piece of the Action," and that ep was very funny. One thing that made TOS great was that some eps were very dramatic and some were very lighthearted. This sort of mix has been conspicuously deficient in Berman-Trek, and a little more well-placed levity would be welcome.

Humor Again

Wanna hear a crappy Sixties Trek joke?

What's brown and float's in space? A captain's log!

I can already see Leonard Nimoy raising his eyebrow while Shatner and Nichele Nichols acting as if they're laughing-poorly.

I'm finished.

It should be dark like DS9

There should be humor but it should not be over-done. The best trek material seen in long-term comes from darker and serious tones

Humor

I'm acctually thinking now that humor might be OK as long as it's not the humor in TOS and season's 1&2 of TNG. I personally feel the more contemporary feel to Andromeda is better for Enterprise than the lough if you're five comedy in earlier Trek.

leave humor to Farscape

They're better at it and I'd rather see Trek a bit darker myself...maybe... I think...maybe not. I dunno. It depends on how it's done. Trek is more serious than Farscape which can get away with silly stuff.
Last nights episode was hilarious! What a great show!!

This may be a big mistake

I feel they should keep a dark tone to Enterprise. If you've seen the 1 minute promo for the show (if you haven't, download it now!) you'll see a darkness to the scenes and the interractions between the characters. I like that. I think it is one of the things that makes Trek more adult, more mature. The best films, in fact, are very dark and somewhat disturbing (ST II, First Contact). People often say Trek was humourous, and I agree - but only to a point. Maybe at the very end of the episode there was a bit of humour, but I believe this has been exagerrated. Episodes like "Mudd's Women" and "I Mudd", while trying to be funny, are embarrasingly bad. "Trouble with Tribbles" is funny, yes. HOWEVER, the darker toned TOS episodes are the best: "Mirror, Mirror", "The Enterprise Incident", "Amok Time", "The Doomsday Machine", "City on the Edge of Forever." In short, I hope Macneil is wrong about humour in Enterprise. A little bit is okay - too much and it becomes a parody. I hope Bakula pushes to keep the show dark and disturbing.

i've started watching TOS for the first time this ummer on sci-fi. it does strike me as trying to use humor more often, even in the midst of dramatic scenes. It's often accompianied with a humorous musical change of tone, very characteristic of shows during the 60's. Does anyone else know what i'm talking about?

You will be watching ENTERPRISE because...
It's a 'Star Trek' series after all, I don't care about the producers, actors, or writers!
Scott Bakula. He is a fan-favorite because of his work on 'Quantum Leap'.
Jolene Blalock . Sexploitation be damned, she is hotter than Jeri Ryan!
It's not set in the over-used 24th Century, full of tecnobabble, quantum anomalies or Borg [yet]!
If nothing else, the UPN promos have done it for me!
Who said I will be watching? Berman and Braga will destroy 'Star Trek' with this prequel concept!
