From Widescreen Review:

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced the maiden voyage of the "Star Trek" movie series, finalizing the pattern of releasing the movies in reverse chronological order. "Star Trek: The Motion Picture &endash; The Director's Edition" will debut on DVD November 6 in a two-disc set for $29.99. The film has been newly edited under the supervision of director Robert Wise and now runs 136 minutes. The film also features an abundance of newly-produced visual effects to "complete" the film.

"Star Trek: The Motion Picture: The Drector's Edition"
Starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelly, Stephen Collins and Persis Khambatta
Directed by Robert Wise ("West Side Story," "The Sound Of Music")
1979 original theatrical release
$29.99
Street date: November 6
Rated PG
Anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1)
Remastered Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 soundtracks

Disc One scheduled to include the 136-minute feature film, plus a group audio commentary with director Wise, special photographic effects director Douglas Trumbull, special photographic effects supervisor John Dykstra, composer Jerry Goldsmith and actor Stephen Collins; a test commentary by Michael Okuda, co-author of "The Star Trek Encyclopedia.

Disc Two scheduled to include three new retrospective documentaries, original teaser and theatrical trailer, a new Director's Edition trailer, eight TV spots from 1979, five additional scenes (from the 1979 theatrical version) along with trims and outtakes, 11 deleted scenes (from the 1983 TV broadcast version), a storyboard archive, and a promo for the new Star Trek TV series "Enterprise."

I guess it was too much trouble to also add a DTS soundtrack to fully optimize the audio experience.

I Just Want To Know

The only thing I care about is this:

Will the supplementary footage, or restored footage, include:

1. The fried security guard scene?

2. The Illia in Engineering scene?

And especially:

3. THE SPOCK/KIRK SPACEWALK??

With all the supplementary material being added to the DVDs, is it too much to ask for these scenes, even as supplements only, even without finished FX??

I swear to Christ, if these DVDs do not have these three scenes, then that story about the footage getting damaged during the restoration will HAVE to be true. Any other excuse is just face-saving spin-doctoring. There is absolutely no other reason for the scenes not to be included AT LEAST as supplements, if they are adding *16* deleted scenes in total to the DVDs!

Treks V, VI, and Generations

with the exception of V, VI, and Generations ALL of the Trek DVD's have been in anamorphic widescreen. I really wish they would go back and re-do those three movies. I'd by them again in a heartbeat if I could get them anamorphically enhanced. ESPECIALLY VI, as that is one of the best in the series. Seriously though, Paramount should let Shatner and Bennet do a special Director's cut of V like Wise did with I. Add in the rockmen scenes and spruce up the effects with the new digital technology. I Would take the added scenes OUT of VI, and put the theatrical cut on the dsci with the extra scenes on the disc in a "Deleted scenes" section. I HATE the "Thats not Klingon blood" part in the video and DVD versions of VI. It's so pointless. Especially since in future movies and on DS9 Klingon blood is NOT shown to be pink anymore! As for Generations, we KNOW that has deleted scenes. There is the orbital skydive scene, AND the scene where Dr. Soran tortures Geordi. They could be added to the disc in a deleted scenes section. Also, the current Generations DVD doesn't even offer a theatrical trailer! Throw in director commentaries by Shatner, Nick Meyer, and David Carson on each respective disc and they would make nice special editions AND would justify doing a new anamorphic transfer. Also, I know it's HIGHLY unlikly, but it would be NICE if they commishioned Jerry Goldsmith the do a new score for Generations. That movie has one of the worst scores I've ever heard in a movie!!!

Why include a promo touting the new series if the DVD isn't coming out until November? The series starts in September! By then fans will either be joyous about the new show or demanding Berman's head!!!

hehehehehehehehe...

Hopefully there is a way to incorporate the deleted scenes into the main cut of the film, a la X-Men (okay, bad example, but you get the idea).

I had been worrying about a lack of "extras"
By Steve Krutzler (s_krutzler@trekweb.com) at 17:05:17 on August 17

But this allays my fears entirely. Of course I can't help but notice that they'll be charging the high end of DVD prices... even the Bond films run $25 and are pumped full of extras. But in any case, I think $30 isn't that bad so I think it's safe to say that this is the first TRUE Star Trek DVD. Thank god they finally did it right. Now if only they get the idea and do it for ALL THE TREK FILMS!

Why Collins and not the regular cast? Maybe because we haven't heard much from him on the topic...That's not really a gripe...just a curiosity.
