'TMP: Director's Edition' Producer Talks About Forthcoming DVD |

From the official web site's belated announcement about the new DVD come some comments from the film's director Robert Wise and the project's producer David Fein:
"After twenty years, I am happy to finally share my completed vision of 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' with audiences everywhere," said Wise, a multiple Academy Award winner. "It was a uniquely satisfying experience for us, and I am grateful to Paramount for the opportunity." The film, produced by Gene Roddenberry, was originally released in 1979.
The producer of the restoration project, David C. Fein, told STARTREK.COM that this is not a typical "director's cut" which simply reinserts scenes left on the editing room floor for the theatrical version. "This project is not about compiling and including everything shot — even though there is a great amount of interesting new material throughout the picture," Fein said. "Our goal is for people to be able to sit down and see a completely different film in regard to the way that it plays, the way that the film feels."
The Director's Edition has a running time of 136 minutes, compared to 131 minutes for the original release. But it would be a misnomer to think that the new version simply has five minutes of additional material. "The film has been fine-tuned from beginning to end," Fein said. "The focus was on improving the flow of the film, the film's presence. Some places a change as minor as two frames trimmed off the end of a shot was necessary. Extensive care was given to the overall viewing experience." He said the film is augmented with visual effects that could not have been completed for the original release in 1979 - "not because of technology limitations, but primarily because of time." Plus, it has a completely new sound mix. "While remaining very faithful to the original film, the new audible experience helps to wake up the entire picture," he said. "It's really dynamic. We're really very proud of the results."

Even Longer?

I read an interview with Robert Wise in the past that said that basically, due to severe time restraints, He had to just sort of take whatever effects sequences he'd gotten and slap them into the film, without much editing. Thus you have the incredibly long ship inspection sequence (great for fans, tedious for the average moviegoer) and the incredibly long flight into V-Ger (smoke it if you got it dudes, this is like 2001, but tedious for the average viewer). Now I hear the film is even LONGER?
Please tell me they put a lot of other stuff in but cut those sequences down a bit.

Oh boy! Is Robert Wise going to make George Lucas look like a retarted fool even more so with this release! Thankfully he didn't employ ILM for the project. Those guys obviously tarnished the original Star Wars Trilogy. They didn't even bother to rewatch the film countless times like Wise and Co. did to see how the film could be improved.
St:TMP may finally be on it's way to getting the respect that it deserves. We'll just have to see!

The only thing I care about is this:
Will the supplementary footage, or restored footage, include:
1. The fried security guard scene?
2. The Illia in Engineering scene?
And especially:
3. THE SPOCK/KIRK SPACEWALK??
With all the supplementary material being added to the DVDs, is it too much to ask for these scenes, even as supplements only, even without finished FX??
I swear to Christ, if these DVDs do not have these three scenes, then that story about the footage getting damaged during the restoration will HAVE to be true. Any other excuse is just face-saving spin-doctoring. There is absolutely no other reason for the scenes not to be included AT LEAST as supplements, if they are adding *16* deleted scenes in total to the DVDs!
