Paramount May Finally Have Plans for Additional 'Trek' "Special Editions"

Posted: 18:48:33 on August 22 2001
By: Steve Krutzler
Dept: General Star Trek

In the official press release for the 'TMP: Director's Edition' DVD (reported here on TrekWeb late last week), was contained this paragraph:

"Paramount senior VP of marketing Michael Arkin said that since the studio released standard DVD versions of the Star Trek movies in reverse order of their theatrical release, the studio is considering working its way back through the series in chronological order with special DVD editions of each."

In addition, The Digital Bits web site reports that its own sources indicate that 'Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan' will get a two-disc "special" treatment early next year, along with the first release of TNG on DVD near the same time. The site reports that DS9 and Voyager will follow on DVD later in 2002.

(Thanks to Navarro Parker and Greg Saum, among others, for this submission).

Star Trek V

I am one of the few that enjoyed Star Trek v. The concept was good, Spock's brother was great, and the entire scene where Sybock is revealing all their pain was wicked. There are serious flaws, however, that I hope Shatner and Paramount fix for this release. Here they are: ONE: Fix all the space f/x (the shuttle crash was great though) TWO: Fix the f/x of Kirk and Spock's fall from the cliff. THREE: Fix the ending - include the rock monsters and a better chase sequence. FOUR: Add more rebels when the "Planet of Intergalactic Peace" falls (Shatner always wanted this to be an epic scene, like "Lawrence of Arabia.") FIVE: Explain why Spock and McCoy refer to marshmallows as "Marshmelons" (this is explained in the novelization); SIX: erase the car tracks up the side of the mountain when they're going to visit "god"; SEVEN: Explain what this "great barrier" is ... in TOS, the great barrier surrounded the galaxy. In Trek V, the great barrier surrounded the inner core of the galaxy. Which is it, Bill? EIGHT: the turbolift scene ... fix the level numbers on the wall - they go past the same level about 3 times!!! With these changes (which should have been done in the first place) Trek V can really be a good film. I mean, it's better than Insurrection and Generations. The poor f/x really ruined this picture. I couldn't believe it when they didn't go with ILM! The god head f/x were good, but most everything else sucked. Remember the warp sequences? They were TERRIBLE!!!!!

THX Digital Master please!!!

I am a little upset after spending almost $200 on the first round of Trek DVDs to have to purchase them all again. But I am a Trek movie fan and I will do it, but they will have to have at least a few of the following before I do so:

- Complete THX digital remastering of picture & sound!!! I won't settle for seeing any artifacts this time around on the film.
- TRUE 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen presentation. This is something that especially upset me on the ST5 and ST6 DVDs.
- DTS Audio Track (optional for me - but I know a number of people would like to see this)
- Running writer/director (group) commentary
- Separate running cast (group) commentary. I don't want to just listen to recorded interviews pieced together as was done on the early James Bond DVDs. ...Too bad we can't hear from DeForrest Kelly or Mark Lenard.
- Visual FX commentary kept as separate from the previous two. I am sick of listening to boring FX commentaries.
- Additional Trailers and TV spots, digitally mastered I hope!
- Minimum 30 min "Making of" or "Remembering" special on the film
- Spectactualar Animated Menus with continuous (doesn't just stop when menu resets) background music from the film.
- Deleted Scenes where available!
- Extended length versions where available... especially for Star Trek II!

There are other things I want to see too...Let us all hope Paramount will include these things.

Star Trek V

I saw Bill Shatner at a convention a few years back (before the release of First Contact) and he said THEN that he had a project on his desk waiting for the Paramount green light. It was a re-editing and mixing of his Trek Directorial debut, Star Trek V. He said he was in negotiations with them and a better special effects house to redo the effects, and finally get the rock men back into his movie. And to clean it up. His argument for the movie's lackluster performance was always that paramount restricted his time and money. So I know this is Paramount's way of making money...AGAIN...on the same films, but along with TMP, I alwasy felt Star Trek V was one of the series that could use this kind of makeover. Let's hope they have Shatner sit in on this one and they give him the opportunity to make this film the way it was meant to be. I always liked the story, but it just needed "something." I hope he gives it that.

You will be watching ENTERPRISE because...
It's a 'Star Trek' series after all, I don't care about the producers, actors, or writers!
Scott Bakula. He is a fan-favorite because of his work on 'Quantum Leap'.
Jolene Blalock . Sexploitation be damned, she is hotter than Jeri Ryan!
It's not set in the over-used 24th Century, full of tecnobabble, quantum anomalies or Borg [yet]!
If nothing else, the UPN promos have done it for me!
Who said I will be watching? Berman and Braga will destroy 'Star Trek' with this prequel concept!
