Variety has the final ratings, and it's a mixed show for the series premiere of ENTERPRISE. While winning its 8-10p timeslot easily Wednesday night in many markets including New York, San Francisco, and Detroit and averaging 12.54 million viewers with a 6.3/16 for the night, this number is noticeably down from the 1995 premiere of VOYAGER, which garnered 21.75 million watchers. ENTERPRISE won the 18-49 and A18-34 demos, however, which the network's previously most popular program WWF Smackdown! has never achieved. "Broken Bow" did best with males, scoring a 7.2/19 with men 18-49 and an 8.3/19 with men 25-54; female numbers were also strong at 5.4/13.
The premiere is still the second best in UPN's history, behind VOYAGER's "Caretaker" in 1995. But these numbers must be taken in the context of more cable television competition as well as the overall drop in television viewship due to the September 11th terrorist attacks. In addition, UPN has a low national coverage of only 82%, which drags down the ratings heavily. Remember that ENTERPRISE runs in syndication on many other affiliates around the country where there are no UPN affiliates.
Bottom line: ENTERPRISE debuts strong for UPN in a competitive market, though perhaps without the clamor that launched the network six years ago.
