Those of you disappointed by the defeat of the Excelsior series campaign, along with gamers itching for the latest Trek offering, have a PlayStation 2 game in the pipeline to look forward to. Interplay’s Shattered Universe pits Captain Sulu and his crew against the hostile forces of the mirror universe – including an evil, scar-faced counterpart.
The design of Shattered Universe will be familiar to fans of the PSOne classic Colony Wars and lesser known Star Trek: Invasion. Although the action and the storyline center around the crew of the Excelsior, the primary gameplay involves duels in deep space between swift, agile fighter craft. The course of the game will reportedly involve branching paths based upon the choices and successes/failures of the player. Those worried that the Trek license has been limited to a mere shooter will be somewhat alieved by the addition and importance of diplomatic strategies.
In order to accomplish the primary objectives of Shattered Universe, Sulu and company will be forced to seek allies in the enemies of the Mirror Empire. Tholians, Romulans, Klingons – even Balok of the First Federation - will all be present in the game to help the Excelsior to combat the forces of Mirror Sulu and the Empire. How the player makes and chooses his allies, as well as enemies, is said to be a key factor in determining the outcome of the game.
Shattered Universe is the final Star Trek game under the Interplay label and exclusive to the PlayStation 2. The title is being developed by Starsphere Interactive, a team comprised of several key members of the original Colony Wars development staff. Along with the Elite Force translation, this marks the second Trek game for the PlayStation 2 and shows promise.
