Typhon Station is a very fastpaced PBeM RPG with skilled, experienced players and a warm sense of bonding and community. We play at the turn-of-the-century, 2400, and are located in the Typhon Expanses, bordering the Neutral Zone, proximate to the Romulan Empire, and near the Iconian Digs, and are on the first warning route of the original Borg Incursion.
We have three stations to post from, SB 185, USS Odyssey, and USS Wraith. They all have general and particular storylines and all interact. This game is not for the faint of heart! The writing is superb and comes hot and heavy. We have some open spots and also we will consider character suggestions. So, longtime RPGers and novices, check us out. See if you want to make Typhon Station your home away from home.

Trek In Review
Written for TrekWeb by Steve Perry, edited by Steve Krutzler
"Fight or Flight"

"Fight or Flight" is an episode likely to slip under the radar of most people (as early ratings have shown). But it is a very important episode, and indeed it was a better one than the series premiere, for all the reasons you wouldn't suspect. To begin with, this time we got a decontamination scene, and no one got rubbed down.

It was more than just avoiding the T&A though that distinguished it. It had less to do plotwise, but maybe more to do with the future of this series, and indeed, the future of "Trek." At its heart were two important decisions - Hoshi facing life in space, and Archer asking why exactly *humans* specifically are in space. It suggests that ENTERPRISE's promise of strong character is a real promise that can be lived up to, and that it will continue to examine the future of humanity by laying the foundation for future "Trek" by the choices the crew takes here. We're seeing the Federation being born with this early crew.

Plus, "Broken Bow" didn't have that slug. It's a simple conceit, but extremely effective. It was amusing that their first real encounter with alien life after the Suliban was a mollusk. I like it because it shows that the writers were thinking about what they were saying, and why they were saying it. It especially worked since the environment Hoshi was in was almost as antiseptic as the one the slug was in. I also liked it because it gave us a great scene between Hoshi and Phlox (though, so far, every scene Phlox has been in has been a fun one.)

What really made the episode was that the writers knew that the main storyline about aliens liking lymphatic fluid wasn't *that* good - so they made Hoshi the true storyline. Do this every week, and we'll wonder if the show has become a soap opera. If the TNG marathon showed us anything, it's that the show was at its best with clever storylines, and at it's worst when it tried to pigeonhole someone like Troi or Crusher into a "character" story where a mystery needed to be solved. This wasn't one of those clever storylines, but it did more than it needed to in avoiding one of those bad character plots from TNG. More importantly, by doing these stories now, we won't be asking ourselves three years from now "Who's Hoshi?" and grinding our teeth as Hoshi tries to solve the murder of a Ferengi scientist or discover why Lt. Kwan jumped into the plasma stream of the nacelle.

The focus on the characters gave the episode an unusually relaxed pace that made it enjoyable to watch. Remember, we didn't see any bodies being drained until almost halfway through the show. The plot really could have been bad if they had done too much with it; it did seem to be out of a bad skiffy movie, as Archer suggested himself at one point. So, instead, we got little of it, and even less screen shots of bodies being drained. And it was resolved in the best possible way - using Hoshi, and her language skills. The sequence with the three ships at the end was confused, but in all the right ways. It was a tense situation where none of the three ships knew what the other two were really doing. It could have come off as clunky, but instead was remarkably effective in conveying what was going on

Speaking of Archer, he has already grown on me. Perhaps it was watching all that Picard this week on TNN, but I like his sense of scruples. He already seems well developed at this point, in a way that Janeway and even brooding Sisko were not, and that's a credit to Bakula as well as some straightforward writing. This wasn't preachy Janeway, being snide in what she is doing, making decisions that are outwardly "moral" but seem to be made for psychological reasons left unspoken. He was wrestling with this, questioning this, before changing his mind. It gave us a dinner scene as good as the great one in "Broken Bow."

It wouldn't be one of my reviews if I did not suggest a negative. The first is that, as much as I enjoyed the Hoshi Sato character work, I have to wonder, is there a tension between her and this older, rougher Starfleet that doesn't quite work out? What I mean is, this is suppose to be a "tougher" Trek, on in a ship styled more along military lines, right? I can't say I'm surprised that Hollywood screenwriters can't quite convey that feeling, but as "rough" as life in space seems, so far, it seems surprisingly without inconvenience and military discipline. So far, the weapons don't seem to work too well - and that's a good thing. And the shields seem weak, but they're still shields. I'd like something a little more primitive than what we have, if that's at all possible.

Keep in mind that at this point TNG was still a big minivan in space, full of bright colors and kids, and had some embarassingly bad uniforms. So if the tone isn't quite there then worse things could be wrong. The episode itself worked since the characters, not the spooky aliens of the week, drove what happened. Perhaps it was not spectacular, but for an episode about a slug, it was pretty dang good.

Some quick takes:

  • Movies existing in 2151? Makes sense - why wouldn't they?
  • I can't decide if it's logic or if it's just being snooty that's driving T'Pol's decisions. Her decisions are logically - from a certain point of view. What else is going on? I'd like to think that, as opposed to simply holding us back, the Vulcans are actually *hiding* something from us...
  • How many supplies do they have? I just wonder how close they are to Earth, and how easy it is to get food...
  • Is this "Reed is gay" talk really necessary? We complain when a man and a woman kiss on Trek as attempting to sell out for ratings. Do you really want to see Reed kiss, say, Phlox?
  • I really hope widescreen is here to stay, both as a practical matter with digital TV and because it looks good...

Grade: 9.0/10.0
