Maintaining an air of joviality, William Shatner took part in the first official web site chat in two years earlier today. Almost every answer garnered a laugh and while the official site has yet to post a transcript, TrekWeb was there to record some of Mr. Shatner's remarks.
When asked about whether there would be a director's cut of the film he directed and co-wrote, STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER, Shatner was somewhat vague, saying "No, I don't think any of the other movies will be touched," but going on jokingly with, "But I'm going from house to house trying to get people to buy the DVD of STAR TREK V and giving out personal explanations."
Another chatter asked Shatner if he had much competition for the role of Kirk originally, to which Shatner quipped, "No, I clinched it. It was in the fifth round and I hung on for the clinch. I was fighting Gene Roddenberry so it was a cinch of a clinch... the truth of the matter is they asked me to be in it."
More laughs came when someone asked if he had any idea in the beginning that STAR TREK would be around over thirty years later. "No, I knew from the moment I signed on that we would last forty-two years. So we have seven more years to go."
The TREK icon also talked about his various upcoming projects, including the film he directed, GROOM LAKE, and appearances in two other films slated for release next year. "Another movie that I'm in that will be out in the beginning of the year is called SHOOT OR BE SHOT (with Eddie Murphy), and to stay mainstream I'm in a movie with Robert DeNiro called SHOWTIME."
Shatner also says he's working on a new novel called I'M WORKIN and the next in his line of STAR TREK novels.
Asked about the death of co-star DeForest Kelley, Shatner said, "Well, I always felt that the three of us were a team and not one third of that team is gone so it's affected me very deeply. I loved DeForest and think about him often."
The official STAR TREK web site will post a full transcript of the chat sometime tomorrow. The chat is copyright © Paramount Digital Entertainment.
