TrekWeb has confirmed our report of several months ago that acclaimed cinematographer Dante Spinotti has indeed committed to the director of photography role for the upcoming tenth TREK feature, slated to go before cameras either next week or the week after (conjecture due to recent comments by Patrick Stewart listing the 19th rather than the 28th as the first day of shooting). Spinotti's work includes L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, THE INSIDER, THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS, HEAT, and 2001's BANDITS. This marks somewhat of a departure for the franchise as the last two TREK features have been photographed by Matthew F. Leonetti.
We have also been able to confirm that after some speculation involving GLADIATOR composer Hans Zimmer, the composing job will once again fall to TREK veteran Jerry Goldsmith.
We've also been informed that casting for the villain 'Shinzon' is still underway, with the process narrowed to several choices at this point. With the character's scenes not slated to begin production until January, the casting decision should be expected within several weeks.
Finally, as of a few weeks ago, the budget for the tenth film, currently titled NEMESIS, stood at $80 million. This is considerably higher than the rumored $60 million budget for 1998's INSURRECTION and 1996's $40 million budget for FIRST CONTACT, but it is not surprising, however, as previous press releases have revealed that this tenth film will feature the most visual effects shots of any TREK. As previously announced, the FX are being handled by Digital Domain, whose recent work will be seen in the upcoming LORD OF THE RINGS.
Please keep in mind that this information has yet to be officially announced by Paramount and is (although unlikely) subject to change.
