CBS CEO Leslie Moonves, now effectively in charge of UPN as Paramount Network Television exec Kerry McCluggage exits in January, told MediaWeek there will be little on-air changes to UPN throughout the rest of this season.
"The Monday comedy block will stay, Buffy will stay, Enterprise will stay, and wrestling will stay on Thursdays. On the air, you might not see much change in the coming year. That may not happen until the following year (2003-04)," said Moonves. As far as specific personnel decisions, Moonves said, "I don't know too much about their people. I haven't even been in the building yet."
While UPN president Dean Valentine and COO Adam Ware are expected to be ousted before season's end, UPN sales head Michael Mandelker will stay.
According to the article, since Viacom acquired UPN completely it has allowed the network to run indepedently under the direction of McCluggage and Valentine, but a Viacom official is quoted as saying Viacom CEO Mel Karmazin finally lost his patience with the way the netlet was operating. The restructuring will take effect in January and UPN's affiliates are likely to also be integrated into CBS's.
