A review in The Hollywood Reporter Thursday heaps praises upon Patrick Stewart's one-man rendition of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," currently running in New York at the Marquis Theatre on Broadway (see related story here).
Critic Frank Scheck says that Stewart delivers "a wonderful holiday gift to New Yorkers." Pointing out that all proceeds from the show — which runs through Sunday, December 30 — will be donated to such organizations as the Coalition for the Homeless, Food for Survival Inc. and the September 11th Campaign of the Actors' Fund of America, the reviewer comments, "Considering the magnificence of the performance, it's hard to gauge who's more fortunate — the receiving charities or the audience."
He describes how Stewart performs the show on an austere stage with minimal props, "effortlessly" portraying all of the characters in the Victorian tale, and adds, "It is an intelligent and wonderfully theatrical adaptation that suffers not a whit from the absence of other performers onstage."
"The canny actor also knows just when to inject a dose of theatrical levity," the trade paper continues. "Taking a break from his strenuous exertions, he doesn't actually drink a glass of water; he mimes drinking a glass of water, and the audience laughs in delight at the audacity of that."
Scheck closes by saying, "Dickens, who used to perform the piece in front of audiences himself, would no doubt have approved."
