Following recent news that a federal court has ruled that satellite providers must provide all-or-none of a local area's local channels, DirecTV, one of the U.S.'s largest satellite providers has added UPN to its channel lineup in 41 markets. Markets including Seattle, Orlando, and Los Angeles will now receive their local UPN affiliates. Previously, only select markets received UPN in DirecTV's local channel package, but the new court ruling means this practice is no longer acceptable and a carrier must provide all local stations if it provides any.
This means ENTERPRISE fans in these markets with DirecTV satellite systems will now be able to view the show when it resumes with new episodes on January 23rd. DirecTV has a list of the markets that qualify for local channel service here, and you can perform a "local channel lookup" using your zip code to see the local channel lineup in your area; this should tell you whether your market will carry a UPN affiliate and which channel it will be on the DirecTV system.
Remember, some markets don't have UPN affiliates at all, so this won't affect those areas. Most other satellite providers are likely to follow suit, considering the court ruling and growing competition from digital cable services around the country.
In addition, the satellite provider Dish Network announced that it will add UPN local stations to 36 markets on January 1st. DirecTV serves 10.3 million subscribers while Dish Network serves 6.5 million. The carriers also added other local channels, including the WB network. This will further level the playing field for networks like UPN, allowing its programming to reach yet more television viewers.
