According to Entertainment Weekly's January 17, 2002 News Summary by staff writer Gary Susman, the head of CBS and new head of UPN, Les Moonves, recently told a gathering of TV critics in Pasadena, California that UPN's future was not to be "CBS' Mini-Me" and that "the two networks will continue to maintain separate identities and develop unique programming."
Moonves further said:
''I doubt there's going to be a whole lot of crossover, but I think there's going to be a certain amount of projects that CBS is developing that may not fit on CBS or vice versa. Competitively, UPN remains on top of the WB, so we have a new enemy to pick on. Can't pick on ABC and NBC anymore; now I have to go after the WB, and I'm going to.''
EW reports this last comment by Moonves as referring to the much younger demographic of viewers attracted to UPN and the WB programming compared to CBS.
Based on Moonves comments, it doesn't appear likely that Star Trek will be making a return visit to the original "big three" television network anytime soon and Trek fans shouldn't hold their breath waiting to watch the latest Star Trek series, Enterprise, on the higher-rated and more widely accessible CBS network.
