The Internet Movie Database today reported the response of Viacom's Sumner Redstone and Mel Karmazin to news reports published in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal that tensions exist between the two executives at one of American's largest entertainment companies. The reports says:

Reports in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal of "tensions" between Viacom Chairman and CEO Sumner Redstone and President and COO Mel Karmazin "feed into the worst of journalism," a Viacom source has told the Radio & Records website . The source also noted that the company plans to report record results in the fourth quarter. "[Redstone and Karmazin] talk about things all the time," the source said. "There is no tension. The company is being run extraordinarily well. Nothing has gone wrong at the company. We haven't made any dumb acquisitions. The wheels have not fallen off the company." The trade publication did indicate that reports that Karmazin will quit if his role as operating chief is diminished by Redstone when his contract comes up for renewal next year could force the two men "to talk about Karmazin's contract earlier than they had planned."

Viacom is the parent company of Paramount, which owns Star Trek, and the UPN/CBS networks.
