Guest actor Jeffrey Combs talked extensively with 13thStreet reporter Jeff Bond about his work on DEEP SPACE NINE and his upcoming work on ENTERPRISE, including tonight's "Shadows of P'Jem." He talks a lot about the nature of Andorians and also that it looks like he may actually have a recurring role on the show now.
"Well, when I auditioned for Voyager their philosophy was that there wouldn't be recurring roles on the show, and they stuck to that. But DS9 had a multitude of them, and I suspect on this show they had to find a middle ground between the two, especially if you're going to be dealing with the pre-Federation and the dynamics of how it all came together over a span of time, how can you not acknowledge that there's going to be some threads that run through that."

"Well, the first one ["The Andorian Incident"--eds.] ends with my character sort of begrudgingly thinking maybe these humanoids can be trusted a little bit, but also the gnawing pain that I owe this guy, which I don't like and is an interesting dynamic to play. With this one I basically get to say "Okay, we're even now."

Combs agrees that the Andorians as being portrayed in ENTERPRISE are a little more contemporary: "Well they're more visceral and they're the downtrodden rebelling against injustice, and that doesn't make you a particularly happy person. That's the way I'm taking it anyway. They really took a risk doing these characters again, and they were scared that the mechanics might not work and that it would cost them money if they broke down, and they weren't sure people would buy blue people, but it all really worked thankfully, and I was really pleased that they brought them back that fast."
