Kate Mulgrew Talks to USA Today about "Tea at Five"

STAR TREK: VOYAGER's Kate Mulgrew spoke to USA Today this morning about her role in the new Hartford, CN play 'Tea at Five' -- a one-woman show about the life of Hollywood star Katherin Hepburn. Mulgrew plays Hepburn in the two-act play that presents the actress's life at age 37 and then at age 76.
The second portion is "far more reflective. That's where we get to do some of the real digging," the 46-yeard old Mulgrew told the newspaper.
Mulgrew recalls her interest in playwright Matthew Lombardo's script, "I flipped through his script, thinking, 'It's impossible that anybody would attempt (Hepburn's) life, particularly as she is still living,' " (Lombardo did not seek out the 94-year-old Hepburn's permission, though a spokesman for Hartford Stage says some family members have purchased tickets. "I hope we won't have any challenges with the Hepburn estate, and I don't imagine we will," says Mulgrew.)
"It's interesting to look at this extraordinary Hollywood maverick who was very proud" even arrogant, one could say "and realize that her major relationships were with men who could dominate her," says Mulgrew. "Spencer was an alcoholic, and he had no problem abusing her and cutting her down. The same goes for her first lover, also married and an alcoholic, and (film director) John Ford, also married and an alcoholic."
Mulgrew traces this pattern back to Hepburn's father. "He was very tough, a strict disciplinarian" a 'spanking dad,' she called him. But she adored him. Do you know that, until he died, Katharine Hepburn's father was in charge of all her money? As a 50-year-old woman "and a movie star" she would have to ask him for an allowance."
The play, which premiered last night at Connecticut's Hartford Stage, runs through March 17th. You can read more of Mulgrew's comments here.
