Zap2It and The Futon Critic has reported the overnight ratings for Wednesday night's first-run presentation of the ENT episode "Shuttlepod One" as a season low of 5.1/8. The night was dominated by NBC's Winter Olympics coverage, making the night a race for second place. UPN finished in fifth place for the night, marginally ahead of The WB.
From Zap2It, "For the night, NBC averaged a 16.9 rating/27 share, according to fast national ratings, more than doubling the 7.2/11 of second-place CBS. ABC was third with 5.6/9, followed by FOX, 4.8/8. UPN, 3.9/6 in the metered markets, beat out The WB, 3.5/5, for fifth place. The first hour of the Olympics telecast drew a 15.1/24 at 8 p.m. "60 Minutes II," 6.6/11, was slightly ahead of ABC's "My Wife and Kids," 6.5/11, and "According to Jim," 6.0/9. UPN's "Enterprise" 5.1/8, came in fourth, while FOX's comedies ("That '80s Show," 4.4/7, and "Grounded for Life," 4.5/7) and The WB's "Dawson's Creek" were in a virtual tie."
There seems to be some significant discrepancies between Zap2It's overnight ratings numbers and those The Futon Critic has reported. For example, The Futon Critic reports the ratings for FOX's "Thats 80s Show" and "Grounded for Life" as a 5.3/8 and 5.2/8 respectively while Zap2It reports them as 4.4/7 and 4.5/7. Also, The Futon Critic reports higher overnight ratings for ABC's "My Wife and Kids" and "According to Jim" than Zap2It though the two news sources report the same overnight ratings for other shows like ENT and "60 MInutes II". Based on the past performances of FOX's "That 80s Show" and "Grounded for Life" it seems more likely, though not certain, that The Futon Critic report is more accurate since "That 80s Show" has consistently been a stronger lead-in to the lower-rated "Grounded for Life"; Zap2It reports "Grounded for Life" marginally higher than "Thats 80s Show."
However, because of this it is not entirely clear if ENT finished in 4th place during the 8 o'clock hour (as Zap2It reports) or in 5th place behind FOX's "Thats 80s Show" and "Grounded for Life" (as The Futon Critic reports). It is also possible that the differing ways in which the ratings of NBC's Winter Olympic coverage are measured have led to the differing overnight ratings for particular shows; Zap2It measuring it hourly whereas The Futon Critic taking what appears to be the most viewed portion of NBC's coverage (the 9 o'clock hour) for its # 1 ranking.
According to The Futon Critic report, ENT's "Shuttlepod One" finished 12th out of 16 shows on the night.
