Viacom Shakes James Bond Broadcast Rights Over to TREK Networks UPN, TNN |

Dept: General Star Trek
Variety reports today that Viacom Networks has purchased exclusive two year broadcast rights to the first 15 James Bond franchise pictures from MGM for $2 million per title ($30 million). The deal will allow all three of the Viacom-owned television networks -- CBS, UPN, and TNN -- to air the popular films once the license to ABC and TBS expires this year.
While CBS has acquired broadcast rights in recent years for the newer Bond titles, this move will allow for mini-marathons similar to those run on TBS over the last few years. The Bond films represent a significant improvement over the movie fare that UPN has been able to afford in the past, but industry insiders speculate that TNN will be the largest beneficiary of the deal.
TNN has relaunched itself as "The National Network" over the last year and seen success with wrestling and reruns of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. It is likely that the Bond films may end up boosting TNN's ratings with two or more marathons per year. The ratings for ABC's broadcasts of the films haven't been stellar, though the last three have had to compete with NBC's Olympic coverage. For more, check out this page. |
