The folks over at Star Trek: The Magazine sent TrekWeb a preview of their April 2002 issue, available March 5th, which celebrates STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION's first season as the series makes its debut on DVD this month. It has two covers, one of which was specially produced by CG artist Mojo.
As always, the magazine includes a number of exclusive features:
-
In Catching Up with Jonathan Frakes, the actor talks about his current activities and working on STAR TREK: NEMESIS, saying “I’ve always been happy playing Riker, and I’m very excited about his role in NEMESIS. I think he continues to grow and stuff continues to happen to him …”
-
A six page feature on the show’s origins – In the Beginning – includes contributions from many major STAR TREK figures including stars Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis, Denise Crosby, and Wil Wheaton and producers Rick Berman and Bob Justman.
-
STAR TREK’S New World takes a look at the work of the art department as they created a new look for the 24th century. It includes contributions from production designer Herman Zimmerman, John Dwyer, and Mike Okuda. Among other things, Herman reveals that during the first year they had to keep converting sickbay in the conference room and back again.
-
The Making of "Encounter at Farpoint" is explored with contributions from writer D.C. Fontana who discusses writing the famous scene with Data and McCoy and the introduction of the saucer separation; director Corey Allen, who recalls the shoot; and Rick Sternbach who has contributed several rarely-seen pieces of concept art.
- For Imagining the Future illustrators Andy Probert and Rick Sternbach discuss their work in the first season and provided more than 20 pieces of artwork including concepts for the Enterprise docking with a space station, and two Andy Probert spaceships that were never built (right).
- Writer/producer Maurice Hurley discusses the difficulty of working in Gene Roddenberry’s universe, saying that Gene was more interested in ideas than characters and had an allegorical approach to the crew: “In the beginning there were no traditional characters. There was one character, and the ‘players’ each took an aspect of that one character. Each was intentionally one-dimensional, and together they would form a full human being. If you look at the crew, it is quite easy to see what part each of them represented.”
- The Visual Effects department discuss how they worked a revolution in TV effects work, and talk about the techniques they used. This piece is illustrated with high quality frame grabs direct from the DVDs (right).
- Alan Sims talks about the development of the first season props, and includes stories about the Betazoid gift box from ‘Haven,’ which was essentially a large hat worn by Armin Shimerman, and the Ferengi Whip which he originally planned to have roll back up after it was fired.
-
There are also interviews with guest starts Majel Barrett (Lwaxana Troi), Armin Shimerman, and Robert Shenkkan (Remmick).
-
As always the magazine features substantial technical briefings that provide information on the planets, cultures, starships and technology of the STAR TREK universe. This month the briefings are on the Enterprise-D shuttlecraft, Data, Irina’s Vessel from ‘Drive,’ and the aliens Picard and his crew encountered in the first season. The briefings feature specially commissioned artwork and computer-generated images produced by the artists who work on the show, using the real CG models.
STAR TREK: The Magazine costs $7.99 and has over 100 pages of content. |
