Guest actors Kelly Waymore ('Elizbeth Cutler', "Strange New World," "Dear Doctor") and Lawrence Monoson ('Matthew Ryan', "Fortunate Son") speak with the latest issue of Cult Times magazine, transcribed by Sci-Fi Pulse.
Waymire says she knew Cutler was to become a recurring role, "When I first read for the part I was told they were thinking about possibly bringing Elizabeth back every so often."
She had no idea her character would become involved with ENT's alien doctor in a later episode, "I had no idea at all. You’re really not told ahead of time about what your character will be doing," she told the mag.
She says she's not sure how the relationship should continue, but she's pleased they paired her up with an unlikely crewmember. "Honestly, I’m not quite sure. They kind of brought up the subject and then left it up in the air. One of my last lines in ‘Dear Doctor’ was something like, Lets see how it goes”; so they’ve certainly left the door wide open. When I mentioned ‘the romance’ to some of my friends, they said, 'Obviously the writers would like your character to become involved with Trip or Reed' as they’re two of the ‘Hunks’ on the show. I’m delighted, though, that it turned out to be Phlox. I just love the charming and innocent quality of the friendship between him and Elizabeth. I thought it was a great twist to the story and I wouldn’t have changed a thing. I’ll be interested to see what the writers do next if they decide to pursue the relationship."
Monoson, whose character thusfar is not slated to make a reappearance, spoke of his reverence for director LeVar Burton, who helmed "Fortunate Son."
"I really like Levar as a director and I sincerely mean that. Because he’s aware of and in tough with what an actor is. He knows how to communicate with actors. For instance, there was a scene I felt went particularly well, expect for one point where I thought I was really awful and missed the beat. Afterwards Levar came up to me and before I said a word he knew which part I wasn’t thrilled with. He’s got a great eye. Levar makes you feel part of the creative process, and that means a great deal, especially if you’re a guest star."
The guest actor goes on to talk about how he approached the role of a Starfleet outsider in Matt Ryan: "There’s a certain style of ‘Star Trek’ that you can’t ignore. I’m not saying its Shakespeare, but there’s a specific tone and style to the material I was aware of and tried to adhere to that. Matthew is a bit rougher around the edges than most of those aboard the ‘Enterprise’. He’s not Starfleet. He’s a blue-collar worker, and I wanted to keep him as natural as possible. Conversely, like the ‘Enterprise’ crew, he’s am astronaut, a trained professional. It was a bit of a challenge trying to find the balance between being naturalistic and playing the style of that world, but it’s one I enjoyed."
