Sci Fi Pulse has reported the comments of DS9, VOY and ENT actor Jeffrey Combs in the latest issue of the UK's Star Trek Monthly. Combs has made two appearances in the latest Trek series playing the militant Andorian, Shran.
On his enjoyment bringing Shran to the screen, "That's what really pulled me towards the character. We start out being just the bad guys and everyone's willing to accept that because, gee, Vulcan's couldn't possibly be that conniving. And at the end, though we may be mistaken in beating up the Captain, we're justified in everything we've done. Every episode points out, 'Now wait a minute, these Vulcan's aren't what you think they are!' I like that a lot. I'm sure that the Andorians are saying, 'Okay, you (humans) have just begun working with the Vulcan's, we tried that, look where we are now'. The Andorian point of view is 'Look out, keep looking over your shoulder, we know that the Vulcan's are planning a war against us. We've been monitoring their communications and we know'."
On the differences between DS9's Weyoun and ENT's Shran, "As Shran, I tried to avoid sounding like Weyoun, whose voice was very silky and pleasant. I wasn't doing that at all, and I certainly wasn't doing Brunt. Andorians are not Vorta. As Shran, I get to be gritty. Shran is angry and he's impulsive, He's volatile, and he could explode. It's a different instrument altogether. As an actor, I love variety and diversification."
Finally, his comments about the weight of Trek history on his shoulders playing the principal Andorian of the series, "The Andorians were one of the founding members of the Federation and that's very significant. I think there was no place for them until now, so they've modified them. They're like the freedom fighters now, and that's much more visceral than before. When they were just volatile and conniving in the hallways (reference to TOS episode 'Journey to Babel')... That's not so interesting as fighting for your life. It's really a cool thing to be angry with the Vulcan's, because they've been so revered as the ideal for so long. Just from an historical lineage point of view, the opportunity to be a part of an echo of the original series was too big for me to turn down. I'm really pleased to be part of ENTERPRISE. I think it's a terrific series, and it has a freshness to it that harkens back to the original. I'm really proud to be a part of it."
