The latest issue of DreamWatch magazine, just out in the UK, features an exclusive interview with FARSCAPE's executive producer/head writer David Kemper. As a former Next Generation and Voyager writer, Kemper is in a unique position to compare Farscape with Star Trek. Here is the excerpt
What's your initial reaction to the latest Star Trek show, Enterprise?
Kemper : "I love the idea of going back to the roots of what Star Trek is. I thought Star Trek was becoming a bit moribund. Look at our show - I like conflict. Conflict to me is what makes a show worth watching. So now they have a series where conflict is going to be accepted, whereas in the most recent Trek series it was bad - you couldn't have people mad at each other. And nobody has sex ? Are there no relationships on the ship ? I just figure if people got together on a ship, they'd be having sex. That was my impression of the most recent Trek series - it didn't feel real. It was aimed at an audience that didn't want to understand the opposite sex. But I think Enterprise tackled those problems in the premiere [Broken Bow], and I think it will probably give us a more realistic look at what people are about. And I think that will be a positive thing for the show."
When Farscape started airing back in 1999, it was up against Voyager - and soon seemed to beat the show at its own game, by featuring aliens that seemed genuinely alien and opening up a whole new universe to explore. Do you think Farscape has done exactly what Voyager should have done?
Kemper : "Well, you can't say what Voyager should have done. They did what they did. You see, you got a situation where you're talking about a corporation, you know - Paramount - that has a formula that works well. So you don't change it. Remember New Coke ? We had a much easier chance to create a new feeling and a new universe because we didn't have an existing mythology surrounding Farscape. The mythology surrounding Farscape was what [series creator] Rock [O'Bannom] wanted it to be. We didn't have Kirk or anyone else in the background and have people saying "No, you really can't do that because in Kirk's day, he didn't do it." They have to keep to the continuity - and they get so harmstrung by it [...]"
How would you rate the latest ENT episode, VOX SOLA, on a scale from 1 (bad) to 10 (excellent) in comparison to the best and the worst episodes of the previous Star Trek television series?
