Michael Piller's Latest DEAD ZONE Update: Staying True to Book Provides Inspiration |

Former TREK writer/producer Michael Piller is busy these days, overseeing the shooting of the third episode of the USA Network series THE DEAD ZONE in Vancouver, Canada. The producer reports today through the series's official web site, TheDeadZone.net, that the third episode is titled "Quality of Life" and represents the way he and his staff are looking to Stephen King's original novel for episode ideas.
"You may remember from the book a chapter in which Johnny is invited back to his school to teach by his old principal. We like using the book as inspiration for episodes. It's part of our commitment to treat the source material with respect," Piller says.
The episode, which will air two weeks after the June 16th premiere of the series, guest stars MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE's Chris Masterson and is directed by BABYLON 5 director John Lafia.
Piller goes on to describe more of his ethic in choosing stories for the series: "We always like to start to develop a story with a simple question: what's it about? Not the plot, the theme. That's what makes a story worth telling to me - when the characters are exploring some aspect of their (and our) lives. It's a lesson I learned from Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry."
