The Region 2 Project web site reports today that Paramount has announced through an unnamed trade publication that the newest STAR TREK series, ENTERPRISE, will arrive in VHS and DVD box sets before the end of this year.
According an uncited "Star Trek Marketing expert" in the article, the sets are currently eye-balling a Christmas release date. Several months ago, Paramount conducted consummer surveys regarding its STAR TREK DVD and VHS releases and according to this individual, the decision to release the ENTERPRISE box sets early was influenced a great deal by fan input.
"They want the product as quickly as they can get it and they know that VHS is the quickest route to market. They also said that what they didn't want was DVDs month in and month out with poor extras. They want a DVD box set that is totally comprehensive."
The site goes on to say that the article confirms that unspecificed extras for the sets are always being worked on and that the VHS version will be presented in widescreen format, just as the show is broadcast first-run (the DVD will surely follow suit).
Note: It has been brought to my attention that in all likelihood this only applies to the Region 2 market since Paramount typically waits until a series has been in first-run syndication for a couple years in the States before releasing the videos.
Tuesday will mark the release of the first STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION DVD Gift Set, comprising the entire first season of the series. Release dates for all seven TNG seasons have been tentatively established through the year and you can see those in TrekWeb's Stardates Calendar section on the left-hand side of your screen.
