JUNCTION POINT: NOT JUST ANOTHER PBeM RPG! Junction Point is a freefloating space station that is located in that
dark area between Gorn, Tholian, and Klingon space, within a whiff of
the Romulan Empire. K7, as we call it, is adjacent to Sherman's
Planet, where, just 76 years before, the tribble incident took place.
We're set in the year 2380, after the Borg encounters and the Dominion
War, at the very end of the ST-TV timelines. This is a very fastpaced
game composed of a solid base of experienced and expert players, some
of them professionally published in the SF-Fantasy genre. Our location
is junction.the-fgn.org and we're always ready to welcome a few
new players into our warm and friendly community. If our roster appears full at the positions that interest you, don't
let that discourage you from joining. There's enough posting for
duplications in Senior Officer positions and the imagination's the
limit on civilian and other personnel.
We're expecting to be around for a long time, so if you come, plan to stay! We can be reached by clicking Contact Administration or Joining the Game on our site.

Star Trek: The Next Generation
STARGAZER: BOOK ONE
GAUNTLET
by Michael Jan Friedman
Pocket Books Paperback, May 2002
266 pages
Written by Alexander Chase, edited by Steve Krutzler
In Star Trek: The Next Generation's STARGAZER: BOOK ONE: GAUNTLET, an intergalactic terrorist known as White Wolf has been mercilessly raiding Federation cargo ships, and twenty-eight year old Stargazer captain Jean-Luc Picard is assigned the unenviable task of ending these assaults. It is only after setting out on his mission, however, that it becomes clear someone, perhaps someone very close indeed, want Picard to fail... or even worse. But Picard is a young officer with ideas of his own, and along with his untried but determined crew, he sets out to beat the odds and lays a trap of his own.
STARGAZER: BOOK ONE: GAUNTLET is a fast paced action story about Jean-Luc Picard's first 'official' mission as captain of the U.S.S Stargazer that readers will find to be an enjoyable glimpse into the backstory of Trek's second most famous captain. Reading much like a standard - though not outstanding - Next Generation episode, STARGAZER: GAUNTLET tells the story of a new crew's bonding under difficult circumstances while relying on Trek's all too common story devices of a villain who is not what he appears to be and a Starfleet officer whose ethics goes right out the window once he makes admiral; one is reminded very much of a metaphorical cross between the episodes "Ensign Ro" and "Gambit." STARGAZER: GAUNTLET is not without flaws or charms. Among the charms are its believable characterization of a young, determined - yet green - recently promoted Picard, his relationship with his friend and Number One Commander Gilaad Ben Zoma, Friedman's use of humor to embed his characters with layers of texture, which is priceless though never over the top, and some fascinating new characters to the Trek universe including Science Officer Valderrama and Second Officer Wu, troubled officers in search of a fresh start.
STARGAZER: GAUNTLET's flaws include the rather disappointing failure of Valderrama to confirm her new captain's faith in her, which adds a touch of pessimistic realism to the proceedings (not all Starfleet officers can be redeemed), though less interesting characters are retained on board the Stargazer for the long haul (presumably). Friedman introduces far too many characters to give them their full justice or to even resolve their individual storylines within this single volume... hopefully, their stories will be resolved more satisfactorily in Friedman's next installment. There is a completely unbelievable transformation of a model officer - and son of a Starfleet admiral - solely for the purposes of driving home a rather tired and contrived message about racism, and a pedestrian, technobabble-heavy principal story with a so-what twist at the end.
However, STARGAZER: GAUNTLET is certainly worth the effort. Friedman's writing flows and the story is well-paced so it really doesn't take much effort to tear through the book quickly. One hopes that all of the preliminaries introduced by Friedman in this volume have successfully laid a foundation to allow the story of the Stargazer and her crew to take off in subsequent volumes. All Friedman needs is a top-notch story worthy of the considerable reputation of Jean-Luc Picard and a sharper focus on a smaller, core group of characters.
