According to Zap2it last night's first-run presentation of the eighth ENTERPRISE episode "The Communicator" could not escape the ratings woes befalling the series since the beginning of November Sweeps. Inching two tenths of a point below the previous low record-holder "The Seventh" (4.7/7, story), the newest ENT installment scored a 4.5/7 this time around, making it the new lowest overnight rating of the year. Only last year's "Desert Crossing" was lower with a 4.4 in a 9 PM timeslot. "Seventh" went on to be the least-watched episode of the season with an audience figure of 4.82 million viewers (story). "Fusion" still holds the record for the lowest audience ever at 4.49 million. ENTERPRISE was top dog over UPN rival WB and its DAWSON'S CREEK but it wasn't enough to keep UPN out of the bottom spot overall with a nightly average of 3.7/5. NBC's ED won the eight o'clock hour with an 8.3/13, followed by CBS's 60 MINUTES II and ABC's comedies MY WIFE AND KIDS and ACCORDING TO JIM. Fox took the fourth place spot, the WB fifth and UPN sixth.
These overnight ratings are based on the top 55 metered markets for UPN and WB, meaning preemptions due to local programming may significantly affect the final numbers. Both "A Night In Sickbay" and "Marauders" posted larger final numbers than their overnight performances would've indicated, though "Seventh" returned to the familar pattern.

ENT doesnt feed the brain

I know 60s science fiction is widely held in disdain by young fans out there. Maybe the special effects are better now, but in the 60s, the writing was far and away superior.
Look at the "Outer Limits." The tension of that show, the thought provoking quality is not matched by any new shows today.
In those days, you felt the writers were intelligent, well-read, and educated. You felt they had a respect for their viewers.
Nowadays when I see TOS eps, I still observe that quality. The TOS writers worked at creating a poetic, literary quality to the storyline. The stories were not so much sci-fi yarns, but parables, morality lessons that spoke of human nature.
Where technology was involved, the writers tried to make it seem plausible, so as to not insult the intelligence of the viewers.
I see none of that in ENT. Almost every ep, I roll my eyes at the contrivances. It's just too hard to bear anymore and I've been skipping a lot of eps lately. I only tuned in to "Communicator" since the plot looked intriguing. I can blast this ep too, but what's the point anymore?
The fact is, ENT occasionally turns out an entertaining ep. But it does not explore new concepts, does not comment on society or the human condition, and does not otherwise feed the brain on any level.

We are now in the midst of Basketball and Hockey season. Many local stations are pre-empting Enterprise for local games. This week's Enterprise did not air in it's regular time period in Philadelphia, and it didn't run in it's regular time in many cities. THAT is why the ratings dropped. Stop being so stupid. THis happens every year at this time, and every year you all sit around saying "what happened to the ratings? Why are they slipping??" It's BECAUSE OF THE LOCAL SPORTS AND PRE-EMPTIONS!!!!!!!!!

Why we hate ENT?

1. People don't like change and this is 100% change.
2. People expect fresh ideas, when there really isn't anything called "original television" on the airs anymore, because somewhere, someway, it's been used.
3. It's meant to be a show to hook the non-sci-fi people, not just the sci-fi people. So yes, it is a little like a half soap opera, half sci-fi show. Big deal.
4. Voyager sucked and people are expecting to be saved by the all mightly god known as Trek. Face it, it's going to take a while to build up trek again.
5. After doing 4 prior to this plus movies, we are expecting TOO much from ENT. All shows have to build somewhere, each has their own unique timeframe in which to build on. ENT may take another season, who knows? You won't, that's who, if you continue to bash it and refuse to watch it.
6. Trek won't die, because B&B won't let it, so the whole "It isn't gonna last for 7 seasons" crap is just a childish way of critizing a show that'll be on for at least that long.

They are just too simplistic

Enterprise is so incredibly simplist at this point it's just boring. It's believability is about 0 and there's just no creative spark. The three standout episodes for me are Silent Enemy, Dead Stop and shuttlepod 1
If I was a kid again and I watched this I would probably love it, but trek is more than a cartoon show...at least it was.

7 seasons? I think not...

Not to be a naysayer because I love Trek, although Voyager started turning me sour, but I don't see how Enterprise can last the standard 7 seasons that Trek series has enjoyed based on both lack of viewer and critical support. And it's just too expensive to produce with its low numbers. So I predict the show will last about 4 seasons, enough episodes to be synidicated and still possibly make a profit.

to hell with Enterprise . . .

I say we scrap Enterprise in favor of a new series starring our favourite captain William T Riker. Have Commander Shelby be his first officer . . . O, it would be great! can't you taste the tension already.
Have Reg Barclay be chief engineer and kill Deanna Troi in the first season finale after a conflict with the Romulans; then have Riker [wrought with grief] go nuts and go rogue, ravaging through the Romulan Empire until finally his crew mutinee and Shelby takes command . . . O, the DRAMA!

The good news is. . .

. . . the rubber will have to meet the road on this situation, eventually. If Enterprise were a genuinely inventive, well-written show, I'd find this news distressing, but if it can result in changes to what clearly now is a losing strategy, it will be all too the good.
As a longtime fan, I wanted Enterprise to succeed. But I'm not interested in swallowing pap and telling myself that I like it, just because it's nominally Star Trek. So C'mon, B & B--forget your pride, bring back Ron Moore, and you'll see how quickly all is forgiven. . .

with these Ratings. I wanted to like this show too but it's just not good.
Rushing out another show each time another one ends is a Big Mistake. Leave them wanting more.
I also think that the Creative team doesnt really deserve much of a learning curve anymore.
The writing is abysmal. What will it take for them to inject some creativity into the show and the Writing team???
More underwear is not the Answer.
I think they have been given more than enough time to refine their creation. Time to proove what they got.

I Just Don't Know...

ENTERPRISE needs something...I don't know what, yet. It took TNG til mid-season three to really start taking off on good scripts, the actors to get into their characters, etc. Perhaps some of us are suffering from Trek Burn-out! It is ironic...we shout from our respective living room chairs, poised with remote in hand and cordless computer keyboards in our laps demanding more and more Trek; but, has what some critics were warning Berman and the studio of "going to the well too often" really happened?
Perhaps VOYAGER came too soon...perhaps the same is with ENTERPRISE...Yes, the general idea/plot is good, but after 35 years can Trek remain fresh? Instead of premiering ENTERPRISE right after VOYAGER's run and the low turn-out for INSURRECTION...it may HAVE been a better idea to have waited and launched ENTERPRISE say this coming January right on the heals of NEMESIS instead.
Is there just not enough believability in ENTERPRISE as it was for DS9?...in the setup, the characters, et al? I do hope time will tell. And, I hate to say it because I have tried to be a supporter and enjoyed all versions of Trek; but, I do hope ENTERPRISE ends up having a better run than VOYAGER. I'm sorry, I did try very hard to...but I have not even seen every YOYAGER episode from lack of basic interest in the show itself. (Nothin' against Kate Mulgrew, Lord knows she gave her all in the project...Thanks, Kate!)

ratings plummet
By MoulinRouge
() at 12:45:31 on November 14 2002

Perhaps "plummet" is too melodramatic a word, but I find it telling that the ratings were on an upswing until the infamous "A Night in Sickbay" aired, and they've fallen steadily ever since. It's a shame, because I found last night's "Communicator" a much better than "The Seventh," despite its flaws. Were folks so put off by ANIS, and by "Marauders," a pointless episode about atypical wimpy Klingons that served as nothing but a fashion show for T'Pol's Amidala suit, and *then* by "The Seventh," which *could* have been a fascinating episode dealing solely with T'Pol's mysterious past as a reconaissance agent but was turned into the "brave captain" babysitting his meek little girly science officer--that they weren't willing to give "The Communicator" a chance? "The Communicator" wasn't as good as the season two's first four eps, but it was strikingly better than the last three, IMHO. It at least tried to show some ramifications of Archer's actions...of course it begs for a follow up. He really screwed up.
The proof will be in the pudding next week. "Singularity's" preview made it look like yet another potential Archer/T'Pol "bonding" experience. I'll keep an open mind and hope my assessment is wrong, but I don't believe that viewers are responding well to that plot development. Scott and Jolene aren't Shatner and Nimoy, case closed. Bermaga threw away their crackling animosity too soon, to Enterprise's detriment as is being borne out by the ratings.
Did Berman and Braga write all the episodes since and including ANIS? That's also rather a telliing indictment of the ratings slip. *WHY* aren't John Shiban, Sussman and Strong writing more episodes? I used to call people childish who blasted Berman and Braga like they were twin anti-Christs, but I'm beginning to see their point as far as the quality of writing is concerned. They hit a home run once in a while (Shuttlepod One--but Keating and Trinneer's talent carried that one and Shockwave I), but their episodes haven't been as consistently good as those written by others. Pay Shiban the money and LET HIM WRITE. Let Sussman and Strong (didn't they do "Dead Stop"?) write.
The Communicator would have performed better had it been aired after Dead Stop, I suspect, instead of the three loser eps that preceded it.
