In a new interview with IGN FilmForce, actor and director William Shatner confirms that after a brief moment of discussion between he and Paramount Pictures, the studio has decided not to invest in a brand new director's edition of STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER. Several weeks ago Shatner confirmed that he was in talks to work a treatment similar to Robert Wise's STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE Director's Edition for the upcoming DVD release of the picture and for years many fans have clamored for just such a release. For now at least, Paramount remains unconvinced of the idea's value.
"It's done and they're packaging it now," Shatner told IGNFF when asked the status of the ST5 DVD. "No, they wouldn't give it to me... I was really upset by that. I told them that more people would buy the DVD – that they'd garner more money – by investing some money with me," he says when asked whether the new version would be a director's edition with new special effects and scenes.
"They considered it for about 5 minutes," the director revealed. "The big problem was the ending, and I just didn't have any money. Nobody guided me properly... I say that on the DVD. I needed some help and I didn't get it." Shatner says the film's ending is what would've received the most attention for a director's edition: "I would have made an ending. There was no ending."
Shatner says footage exists of the film's final moments to work from: "I would have invented the footage. I had the footage of running and jumping down hills – I needed something to run and jump after me. That wasn't there because of a number of circumstances all relating to the fact that there was no money to make an ending."
Also characterizing the status as a done deal with Paramount in the interview, there may still be a chance for a STAR TREK V director's edition if fan reaction were potent enough.
