Typhon Station is a very fastpaced PBeM RPG with skilled, experienced
players and a warm sense of bonding and community. We play at the
turn-of-the-century, 2400, and are located in the Typhon Expanses,
bordering the Neutral Zone, proximate to the Romulan Empire, and near
the Iconian Digs, and are on the first warning route of the original
Borg Incursion.
We have three stations to post from, SB 185, USS Odyssey, and USS
Wraith. They all have general and particular storylines and all
interact. This game is not for the faint of heart! The writing is
superb and comes hot and heavy. We have some open spots and also we
will consider character suggestions. So, longtime RPGers and novices,
check us out. See if you want to make Typhon Station your home away
from home. (0 comments | Add)

When plot information for the February 5th episode of ENTERPRISE, "Stigma," first surfaced several weeks ago, little if anyone took note of the fact that the story is the aforementioned episode incorporating awareness about the AIDS epidemic, tying in with Viacom's campaign to promote information awareness about the disease through it's various media properties.
In a perhaps inaptly-titled USA Today article ("'Enterprise' to explore gay story lines"), executive producer Rick Berman offers more details about the episode in which Doctor Phlox must clandestinely seek information about treating a degenerative Vulcan disease from Vulcan scientists. T'Pol has the disease but that revelation would unleash the titular "stigma" onto the NX-01's science officer within Vulcan society. In the episode, more STAR TREK history is written regarding the famous mind meld, as we learn that a group of Vulcans who practice this rare process in the prequel era (called "mind melders") are prone to this disease.
"By the end of the episode, we're left with some open story elements. What we would most likely deal with is T'Pol's desire to educate the Vulcan people and destroy this sense of prejudice held against (mind melders)," Berman told the newspaper. "In true Star Trek form, we're hoping the young people who watch will have some degree of enlightenment about a situation they're not all that aware of."
T'Pol actress Jolene Blalock says she hopes the allegory will be beneficial.
"Our generation has been educated; now it's time to educate the next generation — it's dangerous out there! This is something I really believe in, so I was honored to be chosen as the ill one."
Read the full article, in which Berman addresses criticism of never showing gay couples holding hands on the series, here.

Bad journalism

That really is shoddy journalism on USA Today's part. HIV/AIDS is not a "gay issue", it's a human race issue. For anyone to think AIDS is a gay disease in this day and age is pretty ignorant. Would we call small pox or tuberculosis "heterosexual issues" because they originated with straight people? I think not.

It was brought to my attention that one of the subjects here in the Talkback employed an inappropriate slur in reference to homosexual individuals. Although there were four replies already, I felt it necessary to delete the post, and thusly all its replies.
Please maintain a certain level of decorum when posting. Opinions are welcome, no matter what they are, but language must be kept appropriate.

Good idea

Here is what I see:
The Mind-Melders (such an original name too) represent homosexuals. Melders are stigmatized by Vulcan society becasue they are seen to undermine some Vulcan cultural paradigm, such as intense privacy and personal constraint and composure, vis-a-vis the way homosexuality undermines the paradigm of patriarchy and masculinity.
The stigmatized disease--which is probably Bendi Syndrome or something like it, something that erodes a Vulcan's ability to repress his or her emotions--is somehow caused by mind melding, which is a more compelling idea to come out of this series in a long time. The disease ofcourse represents HIV/AIDS, which is pooled in the Mind-Melder population just like HIV is pooled in the gay community. The illness is stigmatized becasue of the people it infects, and also becasue it undermines another important Vulcan paradigm, i.e. control of emotions.
The connection between the fictional and the real disease will be two fold. Mind-melding is a lot like sex and apparently now dangerous. Expect a lesson or two in safe-sex from T'Pol (who else?) or at least how to protect yourself before melding your brain with a non-consensual partner.
But the most obvious messege will likely explore the title, stigma, in ture trek fashion, what it means, why we do it and what are its repercussions.
If they pull it off, this could be one of the besst ENT shows, becasue it started life with a question: how can we explore this issue? It has bold ideas, an original premise and a purpose. Viacom should tell B&B how to write their show more often.

How would you rate the latest ENT episode, THE CATWALK, on a scale from 1 (bad) to 10 (excellent) in comparison to the best and the worst episodes of all previous Star Trek episodes?
