Typhon Station is a very fastpaced PBeM RPG with skilled, experienced
players and a warm sense of bonding and community. We play at the
turn-of-the-century, 2400, and are located in the Typhon Expanses,
bordering the Neutral Zone, proximate to the Romulan Empire, and near
the Iconian Digs, and are on the first warning route of the original
Borg Incursion.
We have three stations to post from, SB 185, USS Odyssey, and USS
Wraith. They all have general and particular storylines and all
interact. This game is not for the faint of heart! The writing is
superb and comes hot and heavy. We have some open spots and also we
will consider character suggestions. So, longtime RPGers and novices,

Dept: Star Trek: Nemesis
The Associated Press's Ben Nuckols has reviewed STAR TREK NEMESIS, giving the film just 1 1/2 stars out of four and tearing into the film as the "dullest and drabbest of the [TNG] lot." According to the review, which will be published later this week, NEMESIS is "Simply plotted and feebly directed, it lacks the vigorous action that elevated Capt. Kirk's adventures into pulp art or the thorny ethical dilemmas that gave the "Next Generation" TV series its resonances."
Nuckols criticizes the tenth TREK for only paying lip service to its nature vs. nurture undertones, saying the film's visual look belies the sci-fi setting.
"The audience needs to believe it's seeing a future world brimming with technology, and that's not possible if it looks like nobody's invented the 60-watt bulb."
The review also ventures into STAR TREK lore, perhaps incorrectly: "As every Trekker knows, Federation starships lack the firepower of Romulan or Klingon war birds, so a captain must use his wits if he's drawn into battle with one of them. This installment, though, values brawn over brains, with the measured Picard eventually borrowing a tactic from a monster truck rally." (Thanks to Pat for the AP review) In other AP news, the wire is running an article on the STAR TREK villains today, with quotes from Patrick Stewart and Rick Berman discussing the ideas behind the newest villain, Shinzon. You can reach that article here.

But it really IS bad...

I'm not a hard core trekker, although I have a deep love for TNG, and great respect for DS9 (and Ronald D. Moore).
Just watched the test screening last night (my brother works at a theater) with about 5 other people, and it was just. not. good.
Not to be Captain Obvious, but it really feels like a movie made by the same people who dod Insurrection, trying to remake Khan.
My REAL problem is the story. According to the actors, there were HUGE chunkc excised to streamline it. It became an action movie! And that's where it fails. There's so little characterization and interaction, that it just feels like a video game.
And a really boring one, at that. The first 2/3rds d-r-a-g... I never get up during a movie, even if I'm about to pop. But I got up, went tot he bathroom, got another Coke and some Hot Tamales, went back in almost 10 minutes later, and I don't think I missed anything!
Other really, really bad Lucas-like points - The stupid mental rape of Troi. I thought I was watching Melrose Place. The lighting and makeup really were as bad as you've heard. It has this dim, amateurish murkiness about it. Dark and moody worked in First Contact, but here it's just cheap looking. Data's much gossipped death has very little weight, which was the greatest disappointment. You even find out he's still alive, carried on in B-4. It's just lame...
Then you have the GLARING plot holes that make Generations look like a Caleb Carr novel in comparison. It's lazy filmaking.
The cast looks tired. I don't understand Stewart and Spiner's enthusiasm. Either there is another, cuuperior cut that B&B chopped up into this silly mess, or they're just huffing too many paint fumes.
Two stars out of 5, and I'm hardly surprised.

Disappointment seems to be the reoccuring theme...

Disappointment appears to be the reoccuring theme. The film series, in the opinion of many, peaked with The Voyage Home and while most Trek fans look at Star Trek II as the benchmark of all Star Trek films, The Voyage Home set a new standard and is the only Trek film that achieved a level of cinematic acceptance that has eleuded every other film in the series. The first three films were for the fans but The Voyage Home was for anyone who had even the slightest inkling of what Star Trek was and was about, a reminder of the hope and spirit that made Star trek endure for almost two decades up to that time. Star Trek IV took the risk that a film could succeed simply by telling a story. No epic battles, no villain, just a story and, in The Voyage Home, a story about humanity saving itself from it's own shortsightedness.
If ever there was time for a Star Trek film to explore humanities ability to endure and for Star Trek to explore it's roots of hope there has never been a better time.
Here's hoping that someone at Paramount will remember what Star Trek once was and what it can be again.

Holy crap, this movie is getting savaged over at AICN. Both Harry and now someone else (a long time fan) are trashing this film. Buzz has gone from great to downright terrible. And Steve, you are remaining quiet through all this. I know you can't publish your review until Friday ... but other reviews (incl. major magazines and papers) have already published theirs. You could talk about your thoughts on the film without actually talking about the plot etc. I'm left with a number of questions here: why are we reading only crap reviews at AICN. Lots of people have now seen the film, and yet no positive reviews are being sent to AICN. Why is that? Is the movie THAT bad? (or is Harry just not publishing the good reviews?) I know you implied that it was the best TNG movie yet (if it's better than FC then we can all rest easy) but man is the early buzz ever disappearing fast. In many reviews the critic seems to be criticising similar things: the soundtrack is weak and "wimpy"; Patrick Stewart is "bland" and "bored"; the humour is forced; the film drags on; and so on. Steve, you could address these items here (or at AICN) without actually publishing a review. You could comment on, for instance, the soundtrack and how it ranks next to the other ones. And another thing: where are the people who support trek on AICN message boards? They are few and far between. If people have seen the movie and liked it, why is there no support on the AICN message boards? I'm hopeful that the film will surpass expectations, but I'm beginning to worry. Of course I'm going to see it, but if it's anything like INSURRECTION, then Trek is in trouble (and according to AICN it's just as bad as INS). THe latest AICN review has gone so far as to say the even-numbered-movies-being-good-law has been broken and Trek could officially die after this film. Steve?

All the interviews with the writer, director, and actors make this sound like a smart movie. Now granted I havn't seen the movie yet so I won't say that it is a smart movie, just that I think it will be. Given this one wonders if the fact that the movie got 1 and 1/2 stars might have more to do with the fact it is Star Trek then anything else. Its quite possible he went in expecting the movie to suck and simply didn't give it a chance.

The Bottom line
By Beamer

I think the only way some of these critics would like another Trek film is if it got rid of Starfleet, the Federation, starships, Klingons, Romulans, Vulcans, transporters, warp drive, any reference to the Enterprise, no “Star Trek” in the name, and at least one scene where one the main characters has a self-absorbed, angst-ridden monologue on why the the Federation is the reason the universe is doomed.
The bottom line is the bottom line: you either pucker or spit when Star Trek is the subject of the conversation.

It seems as though the reviews are going from the "It's a great movie" to the downright awful "this movie is crap" kind of thoughts. So far, the negative reviews don't just critique the film... they RIP into it, like this movie insulted their mothers and they just want to destroy it. Personally, I find the venomous reviews horribly unprofessional. The film critic David Poland recently wrote in his column how some reviewers are going ridiculously overboard. His used Die Another Day as an example... just go to Rottentomatos.com and you'll see the inspiration for his thesis ... stuff like "this movie destroys 40 years of Bond" kind of stuff. This popular trend to be the biggest a*shole is epitomized at aint-it-cool.com, but I think it is sadly telling that supposedly reputable media outlets like AP also are moving in this direction.

Critics cannot fairly review a film like this...

...When there is 9 films before it, 5 TV series and 36 years of history and baggage. If you where to suddenly brainwash every single critic into thinking this is the first ever 'Star Trek' they would go in there with an open mind and a fresh perspective and probably all give it a glowing review.
Make a point to examine every negative review and pay special attention to whether or not they are constantly comparing it to previous Treks or saying its like an episode or claiming there is nothing new. 9 times out of 10 you will find a referance to previous films or episodes - or simply Trek in general.
Every review will be biased in some way by previous adventures - you simply can't let the critics decide whether or not YOU will think the film is bad or not.
Imagine for a moment there were 10 LOTR films and 600 hours of episodes...

With a sudden influx of not just bad, but horrible reviews starting to come in, and given that you seemed to like it (4 stars out of 5), I think I'd feel better with some words of encouragement given that the film is a couple of days away. It can't be THAT bad, can it? I have this awful feeling that if it another Insurrection, or even Generations level film, this might be the end. I had an awful feeling walking out of Insurrection, I am hoping that doesn't happen on Friday.

How would you rate the latest ENT episode, THE CATWALK, on a scale from 1 (bad) to 10 (excellent) in comparison to the best and the worst episodes of all previous Star Trek episodes?
