Typhon Station is a very fastpaced PBeM RPG with skilled, experienced players and a warm sense of bonding and community. We play at the turn-of-the-century, 2400, and are located in the Typhon Expanses, bordering the Neutral Zone, proximate to the Romulan Empire, and near the Iconian Digs, and are on the first warning route of the original Borg Incursion.
We have three stations to post from, SB 185, USS Odyssey, and USS Wraith. They all have general and particular storylines and all interact. This game is not for the faint of heart! The writing is superb and comes hot and heavy. We have some open spots and also we will consider character suggestions. So, longtime RPGers and novices, check us out. The Los Angeles Times analyzes the ailing fifth STAR TREK series and its struggling network UPN today, speaking with programming chief Dawn Ostroff and CBS chief Leslie Moonves. The network has teamed up with 100 Loews Cineplexes across the country this weekend to play a 40-second ENTERPRISE trailer in front of STAR TREK NEMESIS, in an effort to increase the show's shrinking audience, which is off 60% from its debut last season.

According to writer Meg James, this comes as part of a Viacom mandate from president Mel Karmazin to invest $4 billion in promoting the aging STAR TREK franchise. Analyst Steve Sternberg says in the article, "It's still one of UPN's highest-rated shows, although these days that's not saying too much."

The consolidation of UPN with big brother CBS has allowed the network to reduce its deficit significanly this year and Moonves is optimistic. So is producer Rick Berman, who says ENTERPRISE is creatively "better than ever."

Not everyone agrees, including analyst Larry D. Gerbrandt of Kagan World Media, who says "They've sort of lost the touchstones in a way... it seems like over the last couple of years the stories have gotten smaller and less important." TrekWeb's Steve Krutzler is also quoted in the article, saying "The show doesn't seem very inspired."

You can reach the full article here after registering for a free account with the LAT.

In other news, Berman talks about the mid-season installments coming up with December's Star Trek Monthly, now available in the UK. Of "Stigma," an episode paralleling the AIDS epidemic, the exec is proud.

"It's going to be in the style of an episode like 'The Measure Of A Man' or 'The Drumhead' from 'The Next Generation'. It's coming along nicely."

I'd just like to point out, I'm a huge star trek fan but I don't watch ENTERPRISE. It's not that I don't enjoy it I just can't get it! We have Direct TV (i live in Toledo OH) and they don't offer local channels! Our local UPN affiliate sends such a weak signal that nothing will pull it in.
I should also mention that from time to time we are a nielsen family and never, not even once have I been able to list ENTERPRISE as a viewed program!

    Trek Needs Heros

THAT is how to revive Trek. I'm sorry, but as much as WE may love him, Piccard just does NOT fit the image of an action hero for the general public. It's like watching your geeky uncle try to be an action hero. Kirk on the other hand had action hero written all over him.

And I have NO doubt that as OLD as he is, the General public would show up in DROVES to watch Kirk, and Spock again. Even if they did it like a "Space Cowboys" type movie where the old guys are put into action one more time.

As far as the General public is concerned, Trek has not really had an action hero type since Kirk, NONE of the other Captains fit the bill. It's just THAT SIMPLE. Talk to all the other NON TREKKORS you come in contact with.

Kirk was bigger than life, he was an alpha male that women loved and men admired.

WE NEED ANOTHER KIRK. Kill off the current Captain of the Enterprise and re-cast the part. Archer just can't cut it. Pump some energy into the show with a BIGGER than life Captain.

TREK NEEDS A HERO, not another whimp. Trek has become too isolated from what the general public wants.

    Use the potential!

    Enterprise IS cool!
At least it's cool as a Star Trek series in it's second season.

It has a very big potential!
But they have to use it.

If the show goes on like now, not bad, but not too good (ok, 'Precious Cargo' was that bad one could lose any hope ...), it won't reach the quality of TNG or DS9 ever.

Where are the stories? Isn't this series situated in the 22nd century?

Where is the formation of the federation?
    Why don't they show this?
Why don't they have first contact with Trill or Betazoids or ...?
They began an interesting plotline with the Andorians - but where is it gone? Just one episode per season isn't enough.

Or if the producers and program directors think such stories would be too complicated and intellectually unsuitable for the sex obsessioned audience that is too dumb to understand beyond a "sexy show", they could even bring the first war against the Klingons or Romulans in!

(It' would be possible to show the war against the Romulans without conflicting the timeline - they just must not show Humans face to face to Romulans, but there was no problem showing the Romulan headquarter like they did in DS9 with the Cardassians/Dominion.
Even face-to-face scenes with T'Pol and other Vulcans were possible!)

Dear producers, PLEASE use this potential !!!

    Here's an idea, Viacom. . .

Instead of spending umpty-ump millions of dollars trying to "promote" ENTERPRISE, why not spend a fraction of that money to actively recruit the best available writers in the business? The kind of writers that Star Trek's legacy deserves?

Advertising didn't turn a failed TV show that barely managed three seasons into an international cult phenomenon--genuine affection and respect and word-of-mouth did. People looked for the reruns in syndication where they could find them and watched them over and over again, not because of some slick advertising campaign, but because the show--in spite of its flaws, and there were many--spoke to what was best in them: a passionate belief that the world could indeed be a better place, if only we allowed ourselves to believe it.

I remember when my family moved to San Diego in the late 70's and how distressed I was that there was no longer a local affiliate for me that aired Star Trek in reruns. But we had an old black-and-white TV in the garage that for some reason could pull the show out of Los Angeles on "clear" days, and I remember how I would willingly sit at nights in that freezing garage fiddling with that piece of junk's tuner, happily watching those static-laced images, just for the chance to visit once again with my favorite space explorers.

I can't imagine any kid today feeling that sort of devotion for Enterprise, and yet I still strongly feel there's nothing fundamentally wrong with the series that good scripts wouldn't fix. But time's growing short. I could care less about Viacom or its shareholders, but it would truly be a shame to see the Star Trek franchise come to an end during these dark days, just when we need its hopeful vision the most.

I can't get used to this.

I can never get used to all the negativity about Enterprise. Sometimes it makes me sad. Why doesn't the people who vote "excellent" say something? I'd like to read more good opinions so we can compare them to the critics, but instead of that I only see people who hate it.. Well, that is exaggerated, I do sometimes read comments who defend the show. But I can't convince you, or help you see the qualities of Enterprise all alone. It's unbeliveable; A Star Trek fan site with only bad feelings towards current Trek.. And I think Enterprise is pretty good!

    desperate

Attaching a trailer to Nemesis is a really lame idea and just smells of being desperate.I am going to do the same thing I do when they show commericials before the movie....Hiss!
Like I want to get a bad taste in my mouth for a movie that I am looking forward to.
Bermans comments that the show has been better than ever is where the problem lies. Of course he is not going to say it is bad but saying it is good when it is not leaves him seeming like he is either in denial or is running damage control for a show that has never had much creativity at all.
What we need is great new blood for Enterprise to proove to us that Trek can still be done and that a spin can be put on the 35 year old franchise.
Give us story arch. Stories about the forming of the federation, dark areas to the chracters and things that dont always turn out happy.
I want grit and nothing everything turning out fine all the time.
Farscape is a good indication of what Trek could be if they just stopped playing it safe.
I am a long time Trek fan and I love Good Trek that challenges me but I can speak for a lot of people when I say that sex and underwear is not the answer to an aging franchise.

    It won't matter...

Attaching an Enterprise trailer to Nemesis is a fool's idea. It's like advertising a piece of cowshit all made up to look pretty. It may get people to come see the product, but once they come and see it's just shit, they'll just leave again, more disappointed (perhaps even disgusted) than ever.

I really don't understand... I REALLY don't understand... A season and a half of the "newer", more "human", "sexier" Trek has only LOST viewers, yet TPTB press on in the same direction, with an apparant deathwish for Enterprise and perhaps, all of Trek. What is it going to take to get this show RADICALLY changed, not just "slightly retooled", and in the right direction?
