Dept: Star Trek: Nemesis
The Numbers is reporting early box office estimates for Friday and the news is sobering for STAR TREK. NEMESIS took the number one spot with $7.569 million, followed by MAID IN MANHATTAN with $6.586 million. The tenth TREK pic opened in 2,711 theaters.
According to the site's archives, this is lower than 1998's Friday bow for INSURRECTION, which earned $9.02 million on its opening day, in 2,620 theaters. That film eventually went on to open the weekend four years ago with $22 million ($27m in today's dollars), and make $70.1 million total in the United States. STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT holds the TNG record with a domestic total of $92 million.
These numbers have not been officially confirmed by Exhibitor Relations, the tracking firm that reports box office estimates, and are subject to change.

I saw STar Trek Nemesis twice this weekend. I hated it. So why did I see it twice?? Well the first time I sat through it I walked away not sure how I felt about it. Then a different friend, then the one I saw it with asked me to go with him and I agreed because I wanted to give it a second chance --- disliked it even more.
I think this was a VERY VERY poor film. This is coming from a guy who LOVED Star Trek V, so I am not too hard to please with these films!
I think a low box office take is a good thing.
We all know there will be a Star Trek XI. There is no doubt. The Star Trek movies have made far too much money for Paramount over the years. They will never stop. All this means is that they will really have to think before going into the next one.
Nemesis leaves us with several possibilities. They could wait for ENTERPRISE to finish it's run and make a movie with that cast. OR they could follow Picard's adventures on the Enterprise with a NEW crew (and Geordi and Worf). *OR* they could follow RIker and the Titan. There are many posssibilites, and that is a good place to be. And I think what is far more important then what crew is ON the screen is what crew is BEHIND the scenes. I think this will be RIck Berman's last movie. Do you really think Paramount would give the keys to a brand new car to the guy who smashed up two in a row? the incredible hack, John Logan will not be allowed anywhere near the script.
UPN is about to re-tool Enterprise. Now Paramount is going to be forced to re-tool the movie series. This is a great place to be. Maybe what comes next won't be much better, but in my mind few films could be as BAD as Nemesis and Insurrection.
Here is one final idea for Trek XI: We open a montage of clips from Insurrection and Nemesis. Cut to Picard Jolting out of Bed in a cold sweat and screaming, "What a nightmare! That dream about the bald guy in the tight leather.....and those hippy people....what a bad dream...thank God I'm awake now!", and then the title appears on screen : Star Trek IX!
Just a thought! ;)

Those of you comparing NEM opening day to INS opening day and saying that it's something bad, well, think again. Frankly and understandably speaking that ENT probably damaged the turn out in some way for those who are not the hardcore fans.
As much as I have nothing against ENT right now, hoping it'll jump through the roof one of these days, i'm sure for those who are just "the fans", they could have said "ENT isn't so good, NEM won't be either"

harsh reviews
By psp1

I am not a 'core-TNG' fan- I think the series was kind of overrated. My wife and I just saw 'Nemesis' and thought it was pretty good. I don't think it is fantastic, like any of what I consider the first-tier Star Trek movies ("Wrath of Khan", "Voyage Home", "First Contact"). However, it is quite good.
On the whole it had a servicable plot, and some interesting character moments. My main complaint is that the film definetely had a chopped up feel to it- I think a poor job of editing was done and a lot of continuity and explanation was lacking. I thought the villian was kind of underdeveloped- and some of the plot was kind of cheesy. For example, when the light sensitive Remans suddenly have no problems boarding the well-illuminated 'Enterprise'. The business where Troi does a 'telepathic' search for Shinzon's ship was a little silly. They should have found a better way to do this.
My main point is that I think the reviews have been overly harsh- a lot of them are suggesting that the movie is quite poor. I don't know if people went it with high expectations and then got disappointed.
This movie is certainly worth seeing, and it should provide enough momentum for the franchise to produce another film. I don't know why the reviewers are being such doomsayers ('end of franchise' type quotes). I am kind of mystified.

A few points -
By mooseday

- these are only Fridays figures. Good word of mouth may pick up Saturday.
- The number of screens playing is not very high, Maid In Manhattan is playing in more. That is not a bad per screen figure.
- LOTR may have a positive knock on. People fill a cinema, tickets sell out and so people will normally go and see something else - Star Wars TPM and Harry Potter TPS both had a similar effect on other films out at the time. Harry Potter and 007 have been out long enough so Nemesis may be the other choise(?).
- 70 million may be enough. The film cost 65 million, including foreign markets and DVDs paramount will make a profit. As has been said before, ST films are cheap to make and always make SOME profit.
- The trick will be word of mouth. I've seen it twice which is a first for Trek for me. My missus saw it and liked it. I've told my friends it's worth seeing. I think most of the reviews are just jumping on the bandwagon. It is not a BAD film, it is not an EXCELLENT one. So most reviewers are going for the "If you like Trek, you will like it, if you don't you won't" and giving it 1 or 2 stars.

If this is the last TNG movie, then I'm afraid to say there will never be another Trek film. We need to support this film, flaws and all. Go see it again tomorrow. If you see any films over the holiday, buy your tickets for Nemesis and go see the other film. I'm planning on going back to see it tomorrow. It really was a good movie, just not as good as First Contact. It was WAAYYY better than Insurrection. I hope the box office picks up Sat. night. Who knows - it might escalate with good word of mouth.

New Blood?

I was wondering...
If this movie doesn't do well and Enterprise continues to lag, would Paramount consider bringing in someone like Nick Meyer or Harve Bennett to maybe re-energize things? Particularly Nick Meyer because of what he did before.
Just a thought...what does everyone else think?

The reason why Insurrection had a larger opening was because people were expecting a movie as good as First Contact. Afterwards, many were disappointed. With Nemisis, word is going to get around... and more people will see it. Many people are also going to see Nemisis twice, whereas once was enough for Insurrection.

Look at the numbers, that's probably the single lowest total box office gross of the year. Even the heavy hitters from the past couple of weeks fell flat this weekend. What the heck's going on?

More showtimes might help?

Perhaps this small profit is because of the minimum number of showtimes. I don't know about you all but I live in a major city. Nemesis only opened up with about nine or ten time slots for the day. For most big movies, they usually open up requiring 2-3 screens. I went to one of the top notch theaters in our city and most of the showtimes got sold out. If this is how it is with 10 showtimes, then maybe adding a few more might increase the profit. Am I not correct?

For one, these numbers are NOT official.
Two, if positive word of mouth spread from Friday's audience, the numbers will almost certainly improve for Saturday.
3, still consider the fact that it is currently at an unconfirmed #1 at the Box office.
4, its doing a hell of a lot better that Solaris id doing. And thats got to be saying something.
I saw the movie with 2 other friends that are non-Trek fans on opening day yesterday and they were both impressed.
I rated the movie with 4.5/5 crowns yesterday. you can read my review at

the only way to save Star Trek at this point is to rebuild the television audience. To do that, they will have to let Star Trek alone for a few years and then bring in totally new blood to take it in a new and unexpected direction.

They're turning out one hash after another of very similar stories - total lack of vision and scifi. This is just turning out into boring old James Bond style story movies...
I can't even understand why must it always be a "battle for xxx" everytime...see what I mean??

Sobering news indeed...
Four years after INSURRECTION's $9 million take on its Friday opening, now we have an even worse showing ($7.something million). This is not good news.
My take on the negative aspects that may have affected NEMESIS' showing.
1. The Star Trek movie franchise, as it stands now with this cast and crew, is not box office. Mainstream audiences do not respond to it. It is more of the same to them.
2. The marketing of the film has been a failure. The tightly edited second trailer was well done but the unimpressive poster, the tv ads and internet and print media tag lines ("The battle for Earth has begun" - AGAIN was unimpressive).
3. Most critical notices were scathing. Even STAR TREK V and INSURRECTION, overall, received better notices than NEMESIS. I do not remember a Star Trek film getting notices this bad.
4. December 13, as opposed to Thanksgiving weekend or Christmas, was apparently a gamble that did not pay off. Paramount was so worried about Bond, Potter, and TWO TOWERS next week, they neglected the impact that MAID IN MANHATTAN and THE HOT CHICK movies would do to NEMESIS. Both of these films will bite hard into NEMESIS' opening weekend even if they are #2 and #3. Quite frankly, no one knew this would be J.Lo's year when this movie was slotted for December 13.
5. In order to gain a mainstream audience, a Star Trek film had to be a *great* film, not a serviceable action drama. NEMESIS is apparently embraced by the fans, but it isn't a good enough film apparently to attract non Trekkers.
6. The post-production editing on the film, resulting in over 40 minutes of excised material, have apparently given the film a "choppy" feel.
At this rate, the movie might make between $17-19 million this weekend. Considering FIRST CONTACT made $ 33 million in 1997, this is a big letdown and means the franchise is not only losing mainstream viewers but TREKKERS AS WELL.
Time for the franchise to get an enema, whether you enjoyed the film or not. Out with Berman and company. New blood should come in or old blood that once saved the Trek franchise (Meyer, Bennet and Nimoy). The franchise needs a new look, new ships, new uniforms, new composers, new cast members - it needs a major overhaul. And trust me, no one will pay to see the tedious flop tv series ENTERPRISE on the big screen (that's what I think Rick Berman is hoping to do).
James Bond had a succesful "reimagining" with GOLDENEYE and since then it has increased box office intake with each CONSECUTIVE film (DIE ANOTHER DAY is the biggest Brosnan Bond).
STAR TREK films lose viewers with each film and if you adjust inflation you'll be doubly shocked. It's on life support.
I wanted NEMESIS to make $40 million this weekend but all the aforementioned elements hurt the film badly. Cheers.
Alawi
