    Dept: Star Trek: Nemesis

Attending the United Kingdom premiere of STAR TREK NEMESIS last night and speaking at the STAR TREK ADVENTURE attraction in London, Patrick Stewart made his most certain statements yet that NEMESIS will be the NEXT GEN crew's last feature film after a disappointing #2 debut at the box office.

"I'm sure this is our final curtain," he said. "All of us are very sensitive about not wanting to outstay our welcome. When the party comes to a close, it is best to leave before you are the last guest."

Despite the box office returns, Stewart says he thinks NEMESIS is still the best of the four films he's made for the franchise.

"I think we have made a terrifically good film here. My feeling is that there is no reason why the franchise of Star Trek should not go on indefinitely. It is just that certain of us will fade out and move on."

The actor also discusses X-MEN 2 and his LION IN WINTER productions here.

He says that "CERTAIN of us" will fade out. That means that CERTAIN of them won't fade out (if there IS another movie, that is). I take this to mean a mixed cast next time, either from other series or featuring new characters.

The movie is out now and has to face the pressure of all the other big movies. Might as well enjoy what we got. Of course I hope Nemesis will prevail enough in the end. We all do, but I am also very well pleased with the movie. Too bad they couldn't abort the movie and try to readvertise the movie and open at a later date. Although some movies have done that before. It just doesn't work that way.

For those who felt the end of Nemesis was sort of anti-climatic, perhaps they intended to fix some of that in Star Trek XI. If there is enough positive support in Nemesis, maybe TPTB will consider this.

All I'm trying to point out is that there is more potential for something good to come out of this if there is enough support. If people turn their backs on Star Trek, there is no telling what kind of harm that will do. It has been stated several times throughout the years that it's the fans that keep Star Trek. Am I not correct?

    Why NEMESIS failed...
    By DUPDUP69 (DUPDUP@psu.edu) at 00:03:52 on December 19 2002
    URL: | User Info

Nemesis did not fail because it was a bad movie...

    It failed because:

1.) Scheduling. Someone at Paramount/Viacom should be fired for releasing this movie at this time of the year. There are still hit movies running, and there are several more mega-hits to be released between now and when Nemesis warps out of theatres prematurely... WHY, after four years to play with, did they choose NOW??? The only smart people were the makers of "Santa Clause 2", who actually realized the death trap of trying to sandwich in a film between "Die Another Day" and "Lord of The Rings 2". They put a CHRISTMAS show back in *early* November, and the only reason it made money is because it was the FIRST holiday movie, ushering in the rest that have followed since. Had "Nemesis" and "Santa Clause 2" been switched, I can GUARANTEE you that Nemesis would be doing better, and SC2 would have been a financial disaster. Those of you who think that "LOTR:The Twin Towers" is not going to whallop Nemesis are sadly delusional. "Nemesis" is a great movie, but with so many AMAZING movies opening both before and after it, it is going to be relegated to obscurity.

2.) "Insurrection". This limp dick of a film is a LARGE reason why "Nemesis" did not open well. Insurrection SUCKED, and I think it turned some people off of "Star Trek" forever. I know some of you will disagree, but aside from Kirk's lame death and a somewhat anti-climactic ending, "Generations" was a better film than "Insurrection". We have Michael Piller to thank for RUINING the momentum that could have helped "Nemesis". Think about it. Look at "Insurrection"'s opening weekend, not even adjusted for inflation. While it was a huge drop-off from the record $30.5 million of "First Contact" (only $22-$23 million for "Ins"), the momentum from the excitement generated by "First Contact" sure helped "Insurrection". But, once people realized "Ins" was a God-awful film, they stopped going, which is why it limped to only like $65 million. "Nemesis" has had TWICE the gap in years, TWICE the level of anticipation, TWICE the level of hype, and it is at least TWICE a better movie. Thanks to "Insurrection", we got a lame opening weekend of $18 million for "Nemesis", the worst, adjusted for inflation, ever. Even Star Trek VI did better after Star Trek V than this. That's how bad "Insurrection" was. There's way too much competition in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy market these days to crank out crap like "Insurrection".

3.) Over-editing. It is very frustrating to me that film-makers today still think they have to dumb down to audiences in order to have a successful film. WHY do they make films to be a certain time length!?!?! They should shoot the movie, and then cut to fulfill the FILM's needs, not some moronic *arbitrary* time like "under 2 hours". Baird can spin all he wants; he whittled down the movie to fit under 2 hours, NOT to make the best film. And don't give me this bogus thing about how "if the film is shorter than 2 hours, they can fit more in per day! Duh-hyilt!" HAS ANYBODY EVER HEARD OF A LITTLE FILM CALLED "TITANIC"!?!?!?!?!? It was well over THREE HOURS LONG. *NOBODY* cared that it was so long. $600,000,000 later, with the #1 domestic box office gross of all time (yes, before adjusted for inflation, mind you)... gee, somehow the fact that it was over two hours didn't seem to hurt Titanic's performance! It lasted 15 weeks at #1! Why? Because it was a good movie!! It told a good story, and Cameron set out to make the movie the best it could be, without limitations of budget or time!! Amazingly, the two studios actually trusted him, and it paid off!!! Just imagine, if Cameron had whittled down "Titanic" to UNDER TWO HOURS... It would have been LAME. And it would NEVER have had the success that it did if he had chopped all of that necessary footage out of the picture. Sorry, but at NO TIME during "Titanic" did I EVER even THINK about the time or the length of the movie. I was so riveted to the edge of my chair, the entire time. If it's a GOOD film, with an ENGAGING (no pun intended) story, *AND* we care about the characters, it does NOT have to be under two hours -- audiences WILL accept a longer movie... they WILL tolerate it if it is good. Having a two-hour "Titanic" would have completely cheapened the story and the characters.

THAT is exactly what has happened to "Nemesis". Concluding that the "Trek" audience (and the audience in general) is only interested in a quickie two-hour movie with lots of action and no character moments, Baird (and obviously Berman) dumbed down "Nemesis". And, look, it didn't help 'em at the box office, did it? Even with that extra showing at the end of the day, thanks to being under two hours! Logan's script was a masterpiece. Have they never looked at the success of other Trek movies?? Star Trek II had TONS of character moments, it wasn't ALL battling with Khan!! There's the scene in Kirk's apartment with Bones... at the beginning of the movie, about birthdays and growing old. Imagine if Nicholas Meyer had said, "Screw this! We've got to get to the action!! Let's take out the first half hour of the film and start the movie at the first battle with Khan!!" What about the scene in Spock's quarters with Kirk? What about the scene in Kirk's quarters with Spock and Bones? And, one of Nemesis' BIGGEST problems, what about the ENDING!?!?! "Khan" has about 10 minutes of EPILOGUE!!! There's that BEAUTIFUL scene between Kirk and his son, David, in his quarters after Spock's funeral, where David says he's "proud" of Kirk. Baird would have been like, "The movie is 2 seconds past 117 minutes!! We've got to cut entire scenes! No resolution of characters! No denouement! No goodbyes!! Roll end credits!!" Would it have hurt to see HOW our beloved characters split up and moved on? How about a shot of Riker's new ship at least??

What about Star Trek IV, the most successful Trek movie of all time? Where is there any ACTION in that film? Aside from Chekov's brief military chase, and the Hospital chase, there isn't any!!! Wow, how in the world did the audience ever enjoy it without all of that action!? (By the way, ST IV is the longest TOS film aside from the first one) Star Trek IV was almost completely about the characters. We cared about them, they were well-written, and they even connected with NON TREK AUDIENCES. Amazing. How about Star Trek VI?? There's NO action until the final battle with Chang! It's all talk, talk, talk, talk. Did we care!? NO! It was intelligently written, and was a glorious sendoff! By the way, both Trek IV and VI really tried to USE *ALL* seven main characters! They weren't EDITED OUT to become only window dressing like poor Beverly, Worf, and Geordi. Of course, those three characters had to be CUT to make way for the ACTION, because after all, that's all the Trek fans care about, and apparently what made those other movies in the past so successful, right!?!?!??!

It's a shame that Baird has already said he won't do an "extended" DVD version. Paramount is run by idiots, obviously. How come I, some joe blow with NO Hollywood experience whatsoever, can see so plain as day these problems? These people get paid big bucks to make sure this DOESN'T HAPPEN, and I have to say, after hearing the release date and all of the interviews about cut footage, *I* could have predicted "Nemesis"'s demise. Somebody's head should roll over this debacle.

In the end, "Nemesis" is a good film, but it's kind of hollow, thanks to the loss of the feeling of this "family" of characters (2 instead of 7), and to the loss of what would have been some nice character moments. When every cast member complains about the loss of scenes such as the post-wedding Wine scene between Picard and Data, you KNOW there's a problem. Eliminating 50 minutes of footage is NOT cutting off the fat... it's cutting off the head of the film.

Berman and Baird (maybe people whose last names begin with "B" should be forbidden from doing "Trek"! Oh, wait, that would eliminate Behr, who actually HAS some talent and vision) need to listen strongly to this: WE WOULD HAVE SAT THROUGH A LONGER, BETTER MOVIE!!

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
The spoilers and news bits spoiled Nemesis for me, but I still loved the film, and agree with everyone who said it was slaughtered. If this really is the last one, I wish they would have done something of a tribute for the Next Gen crew, like they did with the signatures at the end of ST6. I mean, being 21, Next Gen was MY trek, and I wish they had said "goodbye" more appropriately, or at least wrapped up more of the loose ends. Hell, at the very least, I was expecting them to show the Titan and do some sort of send-off (again, like ST6 and Sulu's Excelsior). So much for hoping... Farewell Picard et al....

UK premiere? I (or shall we say we) didn't even realise it opened here..

Reviews are really taking on a hold, just months back it was Picard who said this didn't have to be the final TNG flick. By the looks of things it definitely is, and most definitely is/was the wrong way to close TNG for good.

7 years of Ent. and movies after that..no.. Scotty beam me up.

well i just finished watching Star Trek: Nemesis (do not ask how i got to watch it) and i think it was a brillant movie, but some ways to much like the Wrath of Khan.
A great movie, and in some ways i think it will be the last TNG movie, as i feel the movie ended well, and making a sequel(as Patrick Stewart was saying in interviews before the movie release!) would just make it like The Search for Spock!

Overall: Worth the 4 year wait :-D

Well with such a great movie, could by week get any better?
YEP! Gonna go visit Star Trek: Adventure :-D

Well, I'm sorry to say that you can forget about hoping for some huge last-minute Nemesis cash to roll in, for the simple fact that the movie is ALREADY being pulled from theaters!! I had originally planned to go check out Nemesis once again after I got out of class this evening, but in THREE of the major theaters here (in the Orlando, Florida area), Nemesis has already been pulled. They didn't even give it a full week. See, I liked the movie when I saw it last weekend; thought it was cool, albeit a little too choppy (probably from all those lost scenes I've heard about). But Paramount's not even trying to make this thing succeed if they're already allowing it to be pulled after 5 days. Has this happened anywhere else yet? By the way, hi. I'm new here.

The future of the film series...
By Admiral Kent () at 13:26:19 on December 18 2002
    URL: | User Info
I know I'm not the first to say this, but there's some relatively simple steps that Paramount can take to reinvigorate the film series.

1)Don't allow Berman to continue working on the films; give him some kind of superficial “consultant” role to keep him placated (just as they did with Roddenberry). I have yet to see Nemesis, but based upon the previous TNG films, I believe Berman’s more suited for the small screen; he seems to have a limited cinematic vision. The same folks who work on the television series should not be allowed to work on the films, IMO. Apples and oranges...

2)Hand the reigns over to the one man who has contributed the most to the film series and who is responsible for elevating Star Trek in general to a new standard: Nicholas Meyer.

3)Produce the defunct “Starfleet Academy” film from 15 years ago with young actors playing Kirk, Spock, et al. And, as originally intended, bookend the film with appearances by Shatner and Nimoy. Shatner could most definitely convince Nimoy to return. Just make sure to get a new script since the original was written by the same person responsible for the script for STV. Bleeeech!

That should just about do it!

Definately...Don't Let it End This Way
    By Xeawk () at 10:15:43 on December 18 2002

It seems to me that the movie was liked by fans (for the most part, but them again you can never please everybody) Yes, the critics were unkind but it is definately sad to hear people like Stewart saying "it's over" Of course, I wouldn't take his comments too seriously!!!
Think about it...The Paramount Execs got what they'd expected returns wise, so as long as it holds Paramount wouldn't seem to be opposed to then doing another, and the most fans liked it.
Besides, for those of you who don't remember, how many times did Lenord Nimoy tell us that each succesive star trek after Wrath of Khan would be the last. Bottom line, the actors are really don't know. The accountants decide if there's to be another Trek. Of course the other thing which will be somewhat good for Nemesis is that most of the reviews of new Lord of the Rings movie say the fans'll like it but that's about it. So at least if that proves to be the case, it won't stomp the hell out of Nemesis like it was originally thought. Of course Lord of the Rings will still be #1 this weekend, that's to be expected.
Bottom line: The TNG cast has given us Star Trek, which was equally good to the experience of the original series. They deserve to bow out in a much grander fashion. Not to say Nemesis was bad. But I'd rather see them end with a movie recieved like that of Star Trek First Contact, then this one!

    the end

Well, Stewart's statements make me feel more dissapointed than all of Nemesis' undeserved bad reviews. This whole experience - the movie's build up, the incredible optimism and then the terrible reviews and downright negative feedback from some fans - it all just makes me feel like it's Christmas morning and no gifts under the tree.

On December 13th, I attended an evening show of Nemesis in a N.J. theater with my two sisters. They only know Star Trek fleetingly (an occassional walk in the room when I am watching TNG on TV). They wanted to see the movie because they sensed my excitement for it. You know what - they loved it and raved about it to all their friends. They picked up on the "psychology" of the Piccard/Shinzon plot. Are we the sum of our DNA and experiences?

So, yes, the movie got through to some non-fans who liked it. They don't nitpick like some of the fans out there today. I wasn't happy with everything in the movie but I certainly didn't feel it needed the bashing it got. Now, it seems, that even Stewart (who didn't seem put-off by appearing in an eleventh film) is now ready to pack up and move out. If X-Men is where he wants his legacy to end up, that's his decision. If the rest of the cast wants out too, that's up to them. I'm sure every box set, book, and action figure we buy will support them all for the rest of their lives.

I watched Star Trek VI again the other day. Man, I never realized just how good it was. The effects and battle scenes were tame, sure. But the character moments (KIRK: "Still think we're finished?" BONES: "More than ever") were just fantastic. Top notch even. THEY went out with class and style. There was a reviwer who used ST VI to make the point to "not let it end this way". I agree. Where's the class and style. And I am talking to the fans here AND the movie makers. Aren't we all supposed to be optomistic and decent people? Stay more positive and we might get more of what we've all grown to love.
