Typhon Station is a very fastpaced PBeM RPG with skilled, experienced
players and a warm sense of bonding and community. We play at the
turn-of-the-century, 2400, and are located in the Typhon Expanses,
bordering the Neutral Zone, proximate to the Romulan Empire, and near
the Iconian Digs, and are on the first warning route of the original
Borg Incursion.
We have three stations to post from, SB 185, USS Odyssey, and USS
Wraith. They all have general and particular storylines and all
interact. This game is not for the faint of heart! The writing is
superb and comes hot and heavy. We have some open spots and also we
will consider character suggestions. So, longtime RPGers and novices,
check us out. See if you want to make Typhon Station your home away

DS9 -- The Best!

I own all the TOS DVDs. I started buying the movies on DVD, however,
have held off for everything to come out on in Special Edition. I might
go out and buy The Final Frontier regular edition and skip the special
just to help the cause. I didn't get the TNG DVDs. I liked TNG but not
enough to blow over $700 on it. DS9, however, I feel is the best of the
spin-offs. I will be buying every season.
The Star Trek universe is riddled with contradictions and double standards.
Steve made a post similar in another thread. It is constantly said that
Star Trek is supposed to be a show about a positive human society (in a
nutshell) in the future. Deep Space Nine is a great example of that
statement. Ok, they weren't Trekking anywhere. They weren't aboard
a Federation ship, oh well. However, the series dealt with the human
element better than any other series, in my opinion. It tells a
positive story of how a group of people struggled, in a hostile
environment to make something positive out of it. Sisko is a prime
example. He was given an assignment he didn't want, on a station in the
enemy's back yard. Yet at the end of the series, look at where his character
evolved. All the characters in DS9 developed over time. Yet there were
enough unique stories and sci-fi elements to keep everything very
interesting.
Deep Space Nine's stories were also ongoing. Giving you a good reason to
watch next week. Simply taking a group of people and putting them on a
ship to explore doesn't really do it for me any longer. The last couple
seasons of TNG, all of Voyager and Enterprise just got boring. Which brings
me to another contradiction. In the 80's I remember seeing an interview
with Gene Roddenberry saying how Star Trek isn't about violence. It's about
people working together to solve their differences. This is apparent in most
of the spin-offs. However, if you recall, the Original Series, Kirk was
in a fist fight in every other episode, Red-Shirts were dying and the Enterprise
was engaging enemies frequently. The rest of Trek seems to have adopted a
"Let's Talk Things out" policy. Which, while it may be relaying a positive
message, it is unrealistic and boring as all hell. While we may try at all
costs to avoid conflicts, other cultures might not. Cutting to the point, to
make an omlet, you have to break a few eggs. The reason the TOS was so entertaining
was that, the stories were original, fun, positive and they had action. Trek
seems to have lost that vision. It's become, "let's throw a group of people
on another ship, give it a different name, rehash some story lines and make it
as dull as possible". Conflict is part of life. Misunderstandings, confrontations
will always be there. DS9 had this. New stories, new settings, and conflict.
Internal conflict and physical. Star Trek II, which is considered the best of the
movies had these elements.
At one point there was discussion to do a Star Fleet Academy type series.
That would have been a great idea. There could have been character development
much like DS9, and yet exploration could have come into play as well. Instead,
we have a ship, set in the past, messing with continuity and dull storylines.
There would be less temptation to rehash storylines in an entirely different setting
while still letting it be Star Trek.
We've had 5 series so far. To me, 2 were entirely unique. The Original Series
obviously as that started it all. Deep Space Nine is the other. It was different,
it took chances, it was written well, but the core of it was still Star Trek.

The fundamental problem with DS9...

For the similar reason why STAR TREK IV will never be the best TREK movie (the crew flying around in a Klingon Bird of Prey and not the Enterprise), DS9 will never feel like true TREK to me simply because they set the series on a CARDASSIAN space station. WHY??? Would it have killed them to feature a Starfleet starbase for once? I never liked the design of the station (it doesn't mesh very well against the designs of the Enterprises and Voyager), I never liked the opening theme music (I sat through the first two seasons of DS9 and STILL couldn't hum you 2 notes of it) and I never liked the cast, nor the whole Cardassian/Bajoran subplot. The best episode they ever did, however, was "Trials and Tribble-ations." That episode was sheer genius across the board.

Best Buy Special Feature?

I just checked it out at Best Buy and on Amazon. Both list them as a 6 disc set, but the Best Buy also lists the following:
Exclusive Bonus Feature:
-Deep Space Nine Scrapbook: A fascinating look at the creation and launch of Deep Space Nine, featuring rare archival interviews with the cast and crew conducted during the pilot and first season. Also includes behind the scenes footage.
Is this something available only with the Best Buy version? If so, it doesn't seem to be a separate DVD like with the TNG sets.
Steve is there a way to link and purchase at Best Buy to help support Trekweb? Or only at Amazon?

Hardly. More like "Deep Sleep Nine: Bolding Staying Stationary Like Nobody Has Seen Before".
Sorry folks, but this show just never did it for me....or for half of the TNG fans either, based on the ratings I've seen.
Avery Brooks couldn't act his way out of Janeway's Ready Room if he tried....and that son of his - yikes! Rotten...
Auberjonois was truly the only great actor on that show. He's definitely a fine performer elsewhere too.
Sure it was better than Voyager, but only marginally.

Can I wait...?

The TNG DVD box sets I haven't bought yet. I will, I am fond of TNG. But just didn't find a burning desire to buy them (especially when I have all the vids, but I've just sold them).
The UK is in a very particular trend: start high, drop low. DVD prices drop so far. The TNG DVDs are no exception. So it's good that I've waited around.
DS9 however, different ball game. I'd like to wait... but well, it's DS9! I want them in wonderful DVD quality. :)
I'll have to see how my patience holds.

How would you rate the latest ENT episode, THE CATWALK, on a scale from 1 (bad) to 10 (excellent) in comparison to the best and the worst episodes of all previous Star Trek episodes?
