Typhon Station is a very fastpaced PBeM RPG with skilled, experienced
players and a warm sense of bonding and community. We play at the
turn-of-the-century, 2400, and are located in the Typhon Expanses,
bordering the Neutral Zone, proximate to the Romulan Empire, and near
the Iconian Digs, and are on the first warning route of the original
Borg Incursion.
We have three stations to post from, SB 185, USS Odyssey, and USS
Wraith. They all have general and particular storylines and all
interact. This game is not for the faint of heart! The writing is
superb and comes hot and heavy. We have some open spots and also we
will consider character suggestions. So, longtime RPGers and novices,
check us out. See if you want to make Typhon Station your home away
from home. (0 comments | Add)

Dept: Star Trek: Nemesis
STAR TREK NEMESIS crossed the $40,000,000 mark in its domestic gross this weekend, but it wasn't easy. Showing in only 1,777 theatres (the film opened last month in 2,711), the film lost 646 screens this weekend according to Box Office Mojo and earned just an estimated $1,115,000 in its fifth week of release, a 55.5% week-to-week drop. NEMESIS took the 19th spot in this weekend's box office, which was dominated by the opening take of JUST MARRIED with $18 million and LORD OF THE RINGS firmly at #2 with $15 million.
The film's current grand total is $41,691,000, making it unlikely that NEMESIS will be able to crack the $50 million mark domestically, fulfilling expectations of becoming the lowest-grossing STAR TREK film of all time. The current record-holder is STAR TREK V with $52 million in 1989. The budget for NEMESIS is estimated to have been $65 million dollars.

The "Next Generation" of movie goers...

As I said elsewhere, it's obvious that there is a sort of "generation gap" these days between movie goers. At the last couple Trek movies, the audience I saw was mostly bald, fat and grey, not as many young viewers. Also look at how Spider-Man beat Star Wars Episode II this past summer. The fact is, young viewers are the target audience for films since they have the time and money to hang around movies theaters. If you snag them, you have a hit. And the majority of people now in their 20s think Trek is old news. Besides, I think everyone, including the older fans, want to see something new and fresh already, and Trek ain't it! Hence the NEMESIS situation.

Bring in The Dominion? Have TNG/DS9/Voyager all included in some way. Written and produced by Ira Behr. Directed by Ridley Scott (in my dreams, I know).

According to Paramount's award website, they are campaigning for NEMESIS to gain nominations for among other things, Best Picture by Rick Berman, and Best Editing. I can't help but wonder if they did this with a straight face...

Sure, in hindsight, Paramount should have released Nemesis no where near Two Towers. But in the end, there is one basic truism in the movie world that trumps all others; good movies make money. I personally enjoyed Trek, although now instead of ranking it tied as the second best Trek film with TWOK (FC is the best in my book) I'd rank it just behind TWOK. In any event, Nemesis is a good movie, but I wonder how much better it would have been with the fabled deleted scenes. So what if the scenes would have cost Nemesis an extra showing per day when it first openned. Long movies like Two Towers and Titanic made loads of money despite their long running time. Perhaps, though, even these scenes would not have saved it. Like it or not, Trek movies can't be made just for Trekkers. There aren't enough of us out there to make a movie a blockbuster (grossing at least 80 million domestically). Nemesis seemed aimed too tightly at Trekkers, but even if one does not accept this argument, just about everyone can agree its choppy editing and story holes were frustrating. This would be especailly true for non-Trekkers. Nemesis didn't need to be sexier, younger, or have more action. What it did need was a coherent storyline and a plot that would interest Trekkers yet pull in non-Trekkers (like FC). Like I've posted before, in the end Nemesis will make money. Between whatever it makes overseas, and its DVD/VHS sales, it will make a profit. But maybe now Paramount has been scared into realizing that its cash cow is in danger of running dry, and will do something about it. Like, oh, try to make new, exciting, groundbreaking sci-fi instead of playing it safe (Farscape anyone?).

Hold off the blame for a sec

Now, granted, in hindsight it seems like a foolish decision to release Nemesis five days before Two Towers- but honestly, AT THE TIME, why not? I think the folks at Paramount believed that the long history of Star Trek as a viable franchise meant that they ARE the competition, and did not have anything to fear, especially from a one-year movie franchise that was widely reviewed as one of the most riskiest movie to make in movie history. Who could have seen this coming? Before you start flaming me, please remember that the J-Lo flick is doing quite well, still remaining in the top ten, and it was released at the same time as Nemesis. Maybe the UPN spokesman was right in saying that Trek does need to be sexier...the Next Generation cast is, after all, getting long in the tooth.
Also, with ten movies made (a lot), it's kind of hard not to eventually make a movie that is the least grossing of the series- it's hard to live to that kind of success for so long.
I do agree, though, that they shouldn't rush to put out another Trek movie for at least, oh, six more years, just long enough for memories of Nemesis to fade...

...that they should have know better than to release so close to The Two Towers. Everyone here knows that "Just Married" wouldn't have had a chance if it had opened as close to TTT as Nemesis did. Its producers were actually intelligent and released it after Lord of the Rings had died away a bit. LOTR has made most of the money it will end up with at this point, and it's starting to leave more room for the competition. If they had released Nemesis now instead of a month ago, who knows what might have been?

This is bad (but not unexpected) news. Hopefully, the financial disaster known as "Nemesis" will force changes in the Trek regime at Paramount. The franchise needs new blood and direction. Berman isn't brave enough to admit that he has mishandled the franchise. And he doesn't appear capable of improving the product on his own initiative. Only Paramount can save the franchise now by removing the B&B cadre and installing a new regime. Any other conclusion is wishful thinking.
