Patrick Stewart Likens Lesson of NEMESIS to Real World Iraq Tensions

Typhon Station is a very fastpaced PBeM RPG with skilled, experienced players and a warm sense of bonding and community. We play at the turn-of-the-century, 2400, and are located in the Typhon Expanses, bordering the Neutral Zone, proximate to the Romulan Empire, and near the Iconian Digs, and are on the first warning route of the original Borg Incursion.
We have three stations to post from, SB 185, USS Odyssey, and USS Wraith. They all have general and particular storylines and all interact. This game is not for the faint of heart! The writing is superb and comes hot and heavy. We have some open spots and also we will consider character suggestions. So, longtime RPGers and novices, check us out. See if you want to make Typhon Station your home away from home.

Dept: Star Trek: Nemesis
Speaking in the February 2003 issue of the German language magazine TIP, actor Patrick Stewart reiterates comments earlier this week suggesting an explanation for NEMESIS's lack of broad public appeal at the box office since its December 13th release.

"The success of fantasy films is a sign that people are trying to escape reality. And science fiction bases itself on reality. The Next Generation is apparently not what people want at this time," he said, English translation courtesy of TrekToday. "Recently I said in London, I'd hate it to be the last guest at the Star Trek party [and have to turn out the light.] It would be much better to let the curtain drop after delivering a really good work. That's why this could be the right moment to end The Next Generation."

The British actor also explains that the philosophy of the latest TNG adventure could be well-heeded by world leaders contemplating military invasion against Iraq.

"Shinzon throughout the film displays a certain similary with Saddam Hussein," he told the mag. "Primarily, 'Nemesis' asks the question, are we helpless victims of our surroundings? Or do we have, and this is what I myself believe, a choice? When you live in America, you get the feeling that George Bush is firmly decided to wage war against Iraq. I would like to remind Bush, Tony Blair and Gerhard Schröder that they have a choice."

Check out more excerpts, in which Stewart talks about his appreciation for 'Jean-Luc Picard', at TrekToday.

Actors should stick to acting.

Well, wait a minute, wasn't it Sean Penn who went to Iraq and reports back that they don't have the weapons? Wow, if you say so, Sean! I'll trust that!

Choice?

This is what troubles me about actors. I respect Patrick Stewart and count him as my favorite male actor, but he's being a little too "touchy-feely". What other choice is there? Just sit back and allow a madman time to build his army and come looking to destroy us and everyone else who loves freedom? We've tried peace for 12 years and it didnt work. However you choose to look at it, the facts are that war, however distasteful, is the only solution and indeed a last resort. Even Star Trek admits that when the safety of the Federation and it's people is on the line, use of force is necessary. And what is the by-product of war? Peace. That's justification enough for me.

Schröder

Stewart seems to mess up something here.

In fact, German chancellor Gerhard Schröder even made up bad blood with Bush and Blair because he doesn't want an invasion on Iraq.

So I suppose George Bush should kill Saddam personally

as Picard killed Shinzon, thus completing the Saddam = Shinzon analogy.

Does Stewart even remember that part of the movie? Or is he confusing it with the movie he 'co-wrote' Insurrection.

Certainly if he's looking for a TNG movie that says the best way to deal with an enemy who's trying to kill you is to make peace with them, even STI wouldn't fit because Ru'afo ends up dead in that one too. In point of fact the villain in all 4 TNG films is killed, though the Borg Queen manages to be resurrected on Voyager.

So if the US models its foreign policy on TNG films as Stewart suggests we do, we still end up with Saddam dead in every scenario.

If we do try to create an analogue between the Nemesis solution and the Iraq problem, we'd have the US team up with some of Saddam's generals to kill him and his Republican Guard off alltogether. Which is still probably not what Stewart had in mind when he misrepresents Nemesis' plot as an anti-war editorial.

"Predators of the 21st century will be all the more lethal if we allow them to build arsenals of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons...There is no more clear example of this threat than Saddam Hussein's Iraq."
