As previously reported (story), Japanese toy company Bandai has been licensed to create new STAR TREK model kits and will launch its line with one of the most popular starships from the franchise, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A, featured in the original feature films.

Hobby Link Japan has updated its coverage with new photos of the completed, hand-painted prototype model. The site also reports that Bandai hopes to bring the snap-kit to market in March for a U.S. retail price of near $50. The model will be pre-painted with the "Aztec" surface pattern and come with all the equipment necessary to light up the entire miniature. At 1/850 scale, the new kit will be about 14.5 inches in length.

You can learn more and see more of the latest photos here. Toy maker Polar Lights will release its NCC-1701 and NX-01 snap model kits in July, but there is no other info for those sets yet.

Art Asylum has also released a photo of its upcoming NCC-1701-A toy here. You can also see an early look at the packaging for the toy at American Dream Comics. Art Asylum president Adam Unger told the site that the line of vehicles may be called "Starship Legends."

Will trekweb.com make the Enterprise-A Art Asylum toy available for pre-order? If not, where can this be done?

Thanks.

The Art Asylum toy Enterprise looks gorgeous. I can't wait to get her. I just wonder how the toy compares in size to the NX-01.

Also, the box says NCC-1701-A, but the actual toy says NCC-1701. I know, it's a small thing. I wondered if they were going to keep continuity there.

Very nice. Glad to know that I won't have to get the model for a decent display replica.

Both models look really good. I love the idea of them being prepainted and snap kits!!!! Finally a model I can put together without it looking like something from the trash heap. :) They mentioned "hitting store shelves", frankly I neve saw the nx01 in a store. I saw it online of course and in the fanclub mag ads but never in the stores.

Only quibbles are:

1.) Wish it were bigger than 14" in length.

2.) Wish it wasn't molded in black plastic. Were it molded in white, one could add interior lights to create the "spotlight effect" from within the model. Since it's black plastic, no light will come through.
